"Are you authorized to be up here?"

Daniel hadn't heard her coming up. He turned around quickly, his breath escaping in a dense puff to float like dandelion fluff against the black night sky. "O-oh, Ms. Hawkeye."

"I told you 'Liz' was all right," she crossed her arms over the front of her thick winter-weight uniform. Up close it seemed puffy, but no one here seemed to have overmuch trouble moving around in them and it was probably much warmer than even the four ridiculous layers he had packed himself into. Were there any movies that showed the dark clad Briggs troops moving across the snow? If they weren't, Daniel thought there should be. It would so picturesque.

"Yeah, sorry. Liz. The general okayed it as long as I didn't get in anyone's way. I figured that night was a good time for being out of the way. There's just the lookout," he nodded in the direction of the single man currently stationed at the furthest edge of the wall.

"You can see more during the day though."

"At night, you can see the stars."

Upon his cue, they both looked up. Above the white mountains, the night was spattered full of pricks of light.

"What do you think about when you're looking at these stars?" Liz wondered.

"Lots of things. That they're pretty, mostly. …Sometimes, you know, I think I should have listened and stayed away from alchemy."

She wasn't sure why someone who was practically a stranger would be telling her that, but maybe Daniel didn't see her the same way she saw him. He remembered hearing about her occasionally when she was very young. He didn't know she was an alchemist. "What would you have done?"

"…I guess it probably wouldn't have worked out too easily either, but…be a painter."

He was still focused on the sky, doing what she would now probably re-categorize as 'that dreamy painter gaze' now that she had a better idea what fueled it, so Liz could look at him unscrutinized. Although his expression was usually gentle, something about a direct hit from his narrow eyes could make her uncomfortable. Maybe it was just knowing he was an alchemist, but not knowing anything about his alchemy. Maybe it was the little she knew about his family background. The little that was too much.

"All the stars remind me of when I was growing up. I was born in, um, Border City, I'm told, but I grew up in a small town in the south. Then it was kind of back and forth between there and Resembool and Rush Valley. …I don't see many stars anymore in Central."

"I grew up in the city, but sometimes we would go camping."

Daniel clasped his gloved hands behind his back and leaned back a bit on his heels. "Once you convince yourself you aren't going to freeze to death, the cold is a bit invigorating."

Liz rolled her eyes. "Get back below, civilian. Your nose is as red as a cherry."
