[feb 13] [Slayers] Reflections of a Mother

Title: Reflections of a Mother
Day/Theme: 13. Whoever can love like this will be saved.
Series: The Slayers
Character/Pairing: Lina/Gourry, Lord of Nightmares.
Rating: PG.

There is never an explanation, a reason spelled out, as to why she works the way she dies. The Lord of Nightmares, Mother of All Things, the King of Chaos, ultimately does whatever the hell she wants.

Observing humans is one of them.

It was an interesting day; a day where she observed two creations of hers clash powers. One had a plan about to come to fruition. Destruction of all things. Bringing the world back into the Sea of Chaos where it belongs. It’s a mazoku’s ultimate goal, after all. That’s what they were created to do.

Humans, however, were created to survive.

But this human was always a strange one.

The Lord of Nightmares doesn’t recall having a human call upon her power the way this one did. She survives just like every other human does. Fights hard, sometimes harder than the rest. Comes up with the strangest ways, uses her power to create and call upon things she doesn’t understand. Some say it’s a bit of hubris, really. Daring to call upon a power never understood, a power deemed as mythical and non-existing. The Lord of Nightmares is neither a god or dark lord. She’s but a legend often swept under the rug.

Mazoku and humans couldn’t be any different from the core. One is programmed for destruction and forced loyalty. The other has natural instincts to live, to survive.

To love.

Love. It’s like its own sorcery, magic, being, of its own.

So when this strange girl calls upon destruction in exchange for the life she puts so much love in, the Lord of Nightmares can’t help to be a little intrigued. The little girl is a willing sacrifice. An exchange of life for someone else’s.

Even more interesting when the other human, desperate to bring her back, did everything he could – even chase and touch the Lord of Nightmares. Okay, it might not have been technically her, but at that very moment, the girl’s body belonged to her anyway.

Maybe the mortal man was stupid. Foolish. Maybe he didn’t know what he was going up against. And maybe if he did, who’s to say he would care? He knew the sacrifice that was made, he knew what it cost her, and he fought for her regardless of the consequence.

And because the Lord of Nightmares does whatever the hell she wants, she does have the ability to override balance and order. She is the Sea of Chaos, after all. The exchange was forfeited to let them reunite.

She’s nice like that sometimes.

“So who was the weird person taking over your body again?” asks Gourry, just about done cooking a salmon over their campfire. Days later and they had all finally went separate ways; Zelgadis for his cure, Amelia back home to her royalty duties accompanied by Sylphiel, Xelloss...somewhere being Xelloss, and Martina and Zangulus starting their own lives as a married couple and trying not to come after Lina after that wedding disaster.

It’s the first time they get to spend some quality time together and there’s a thick tension in the air. Some things need to be said but Lina’s not all that good talking about feelings that turn her into goo, and Gourry sometimes says not-so-smart things.

She’s mindlessly playing with her talismans when he speaks up. Lina glances up, eyebrow rising. He’s not looking at her. Instead he examines the fish, makes sure it’s cooked all the way through and adds it to the pile of seared dinner. For once, neither of them start digging into their meal immediately.

Lina could, of course, give him a rundown of what she was sure happened, but Gourry had the attention span of a guppy and quite frankly, her breath might be wasted. Not to mention it is still a strangely sore topic. It seems more like a dream to her. She remembers everyone dying, Martina’s words, the crazed, maniacal look of Hellmaster’s childish eyes and something in her snapping.

Because he made everything personal. Too personal.

“To keep it simple, I’m pretty sure the creator of all things possessed my body there for a bit.”

Creator of all things. Gourry wrinkled his nose thoughtfully. “Sounds serious,” he says. She crawls closer to him after dumping her shoulder pads and cape to the side, and then reaches out for a fish. Both munch quietly. Chirping crickets is the only sound they here for awhile before he speaks again. “So, I just went after something pretty badass, didn’t I? Couldn’t it have destroyed me with its mind or something?”

Lina chokes on a piece of fish for a minute but then is able to swallow. She wipes her mouth and looks at him oddly. “I mean, I guess. Seriously, Gourry. You didn’t get the vibe that you were facing something a little bit bigger than Phibrizzo?”

“I kinda did,” Gourry admits and flashes her a sheepish grin. “Even if I had a better idea of what it was, it wouldn’t have mattered.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

He pauses before responding. Then, he picks up another fish but instead of keeping it for himself, he offers it to her. “I would have still gone to get you, no matter what.”

Lina’s sure her heart just skipped a few beats. She blinks and slowly takes the fish, biting into it. Both of them are eyeing each other, unsure if a statement like that should have a more serious conversation pursuing it, but right now, both are simply content in grinning at each other and resume their routine of bickering over food.
