[February 7, 2013] [Detective Conan] A Love Forever Unrequieted

Title: A Love Forever Unrequieted
Day/Theme: February 7, 2013 - To love only sorrow.
Series: Detective Conan
Characters: Ujou Ruri (Kogorou and Eri's mutual childhood friend), Nagumo Akira (Ruri's real father), and Mouri Kogorou, with mentions of Kisaki Eri
Rating: PG (for mentions of murder? Then again considering the nature of this series . . .)

Outside the villa where a murder had occurred just hours earlier, Ujou Ruri watched her real father, Nagumo Akira, as he was escorted by the police to the police car.

Her childhood friend, Mouri Kogorou, approached her from behind. "Um, Ruri-ppe, look, I'm really sorry about your father."

Ruri responded in a soft voice. "It's okay, Kogorou-chan; you were only doing your job as a detective, after all." She flashed him a melancholy smile. "But I'm really glad you talked to me instead of telling the police."

"Well," Kogorou rubbed the nape of his neck. "Judging from how you two act around each other, I figured your relationship with Nagumo-san is something neither one of you want to be out in the open. And, besides, it wasn't even premeditated murder. . . ."

She nodded.

"I can ask Eri and tell her to represent him—"

"What?"

"With her skills, I'm sure she can get him a lower sentence!" Kogorou smiled, and Ruri can sense the pride emanating from it. It made her stomach churn. "Don't worry, I'll tell her that he's just a close friend of yours, okay?"

Before Ruri could answer, however, Kogorou fishes his cell phone from his pants pocket and proceeds to call his wife. "Hello, Eri. I have a favor to ask of you—"

There they go again. Ruri chuckled softly as she listened to her two friends bicker like the old days.

It was bittersweet, in a way. Memories of her childhood and her early teens came back to her. The fun times the three of them had together, Kogorou-chan and Eri-chan's constant arguing, how she ended up falling in love with him . . .

He was the reason why she never married and never will. He was her first love.

It's funny, she's a famous actress, known all over the country as Japan's Sweetheart, but she could never win his heart.

After all, a famous actress could never defeat a Queen.

She was always in second place. In academics, athletic events but, most importantly, him.

Even as her two friends have been estranged for over ten years, she still couldn't beat beat her.

He may pretend not to care for her anymore, but it was obvious he was still in love with her. Why else would he associate her father's attitude toward him during their conversation earlier with that of the time he went to meet Eri-chan's dad. If that wasn't true love, she didn't know what is.

She should just accept it and move on. She would never win his affections, even if he was separate from his wife. She wouldn't stand a chance against Eri-chan. Never has, never will.

Why couldn't he have fallen in love with her instead? She definitely wouldn't leave him the way Eri-chan did.

She couldn't understand how they even got together in the first place. They were always fighting, always on edge with one another.

Even so, he had always cared a lot about her. Ruri had always sensed how he'd been crushing on Eri-chan since they were kids (though Ruri was never quite sure how aware he was of his own felings back then). How upset he would get whenever she gave him the cold shoulder (although he always pretended not to care, that is, until he couldn't take it anymore and he would be begging for her forgiveness). How he, despite his dislike of academics, studied really hard for his middle-school and high-school entrance exams so that he could go to the same school as Eri-chan. Just so he can catch up with her.

Ruri had studied really hard, too, not just during entrance-examination season, but all throughout her years of school. She figured, if she could beat Eri-chan in terms of academics, maybe he begin to see her as more than just a childhood friend. She welcomed the onset of her myopia during middle school as she would have an excuse to start wearing glasses just like Eri-chan, even though her parents said she would look better in contacts. Smart girls, meganekkos (1), that's probably his type.

Was it really? In middle school, he had begun shamelessly flirting with all the female students of the school, save for her and Eri-chan. In fact, he teased the latter even more adding "flat chested" to his repetoire of insults. Anyone who was familiar with watching romances—her mother was a former actress—knows what that meant.

And it didn't really help that he would glare at any guy who tried to talk to Eri-chan, even if it's just for homework help or if some of those guys already had girlfriends.

Maybe it wasn't the brains or the glasses he liked about Eri-chan. If it were the case why couldn't he see her the way she saw him? She had top grades, too, although they were never quite as good as Eri-chan's;she was the smartest girl in all of the schools they've attended, after all. In their little trio, Eri -chan was the "nagging witch"—in his terms—and Ruri was the demure one, playing the role of peacemaker whenever they get into another one of their fights. Looking back on those days, maybe it was Eri-chan's strong personality he was attracted to. While Eri-chan had never told her why she left him, Ruri couldn't help feel as if her strong personality had something to do with it. Why, if she she were his wife, Ruri would never leave him. He may be stubborn and likes to act tough but, deep inside, he's kind, caring, dependable, principled, sensitive. . . . This was why she fell in love with him in the first place, despite his reputation as a flirt and a good-for-nothing delinquent with no future.

Did Eri-chan see all those things in him, too?

Then why did she leave him?

Ruri wiped a tear that came out of her left eye. I wish he chose me instead.

Note:
(1) meganekko - a girl who wears glasses; literally, "glasses girl"

Ended up a lot longer than I thought it would, so I really apologize for this piece; I only got to write this on the day of the deadline, and I had no time to edit or revise! *is shot* Having said that, I'm going to revise and maybe expand on this, including my fic journal.

Actually, I was going to post an unrelated Kogorou-centric sort-of-gen fic (which is supposed to be a side story for a lengthy and long-overdue birthday fic I'm writing) a minute before midnight, but I ended up posting to the wrong community, grrr. Guess I'll just have to wait until Amnesty Day—and to think I worked so hard to finish the fic on time, too!

Anyway, I do hope you guys enjoyed this piece, and please, please,
please tell me how I can improve! Until next time!
