[February 1] [Watchmen] Both Meanings of Pall
Title: Both Meanings of Pall
Day/Theme: 1 You want a better story. Who wouldn’t?
Series: Watchmen
Character/Pairing: Dan
Logic said that he should just be happy to be alive. This could've been much, much worse. He hadn't lost everything. Not like-
He blocked that thought. He had lost plenty. He couldn't go home. The closest thing he had to a father was dead. He hadn't had a partner for years, so that loss shouldn't sting so much.
He was still free. He was still alive. He still had Laurie. She huddled in the passenger seat, staring at him. She was a lot younger than him, he remembered suddenly. She was waiting to see what he would do, what he would say. He could not spit out a single word of comfort. As busy as his mind was, his throat was too tight.
He wanted to tell her it would be all right, but all the good news was bad. They couldn't go home because their identities had been revealed. There might not be a home to go back to. With millions dead, who was going to care about two awol vigilantes. No one would be looking for them.
They had nowhere to go and all they had was what was with them. He still had some fake identities lined up, though Laurie wasn't the one he had made the extra one for. At least it wasn't her spread over the snow. Jon wouldn't have hurt her. If she had been the one to stand up to Adrian's plot, Jon might have even sided with her against him.
I would've been another smear of red if I had, he thought. No point in dying for nothing. Except that there might not be the pall of betrayal and failure hanging over him if he had. He was lucky to be alive. So many weren't. It should've been enough. It wasn't.
They were supposed to be heroes. There was supposed to be a happy ending. And he didn't want to hear any more of Jon's pseudo-philosophy about nothing ending. Laurie might be clinging to it, but enough things had ended this day to prove it wrong. Everything ended. Just not the way he had ever expected, or wanted.
