[October 7th] [Original] And I ran

Title: And I ran
Day/Theme: October 7: Fly, vultures, fly
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Belle/Diana
Rating: PG
Author's Note: Probably in a territory in the Old West.

“I never have told what I was running from, have I?” Belle asked. It was a rhetorical question; of course Belle hadn’t said anything. It was the first time she’d ever mentioned anything about what had caused her to fall broken and bleeding on the steps of Diana’s house in the middle of a vicious storm.

“No…” Diana answered, trying not to sound over eager to know. Belle knelt by the window ledge, brushing back the gingham curtains and gazing unseeing into the clear blue sky. She looked white in the bright daylight, only her dark hair betraying her origins. Diana was still on the bed, almost holding her breath.

“The vultures. That’s what I fled from.”

“My tribe was at war. I don’t know if there is anything left to fight over now.” She closed her eyes, bringing her hands to her ears to block out the laughter and musket fire. Diana’s arms drew around her, pulling her close and easing her trembling.

“I had to run. But I feel like a such a coward.”

“I think you are the bravest person I have ever known,” Diana whispered into her hair, and for a moment, that was enough.
