He threw it.

The talisman flew through the air, flying from Yoshino's palm. It was a desperate attempt to save the two children, the two crying and screaming children. The chances of him reaching the pair in time were very slim. In fact, it was next to none. But, he had to try.

The distance between the children and Yoshino was great, even with all of his running. The earth jutted upwards, disturbed by the rise of the fruit into the sky. Yoshino slid down the incline. Over the deafening sound of his racing heartbeat, he heard Mahiro yell his name. The only thought was to get there, to get to those that needed his help. He wasn't going to make it in time by foot. So, Yoshino had thrown the ring-shaped talisman to the kids.

He meant to shield them, to help them, to save them. But, when the fruit had sailed beyond the clouds, the only living people left were Mahiro and Yoshino. The talisman sat before two statues with faces contorted in the final moments of fear. Yoshino was silent as he stared at the ground. The ring had landed; the throw hadn't missed. The children just weren't saved.

"They just couldn't find a way to survive" are the indifferent, borderline-cold words that Mahiro speaks. Is that supposed to make Yoshino feel better? If so, it's not working because it doesn't change or lessen the overwhelming feeling of uselessness, of the inability to save, that consumes Yoshino.

The only thing audible in the barren field is the soft pitter-patter of the falling rain.
