Two Eyes

The window to the soul
or so they said
such orbs – glistening like a mirror’s face – to be
yet they forgot…or perhaps ignored
the lie within each curve, each slice
of glass

slipping
like soil into the ridges
of the palm that spells destiny upon its flat
thus that lines became more prominent:
impossible to ignore yet so easy to misread
with skeletal lines pulling
away from the truth and towards
a lie.

Two brown eyes stare from a window seat
appearing warm
yet coated with a heavy grease underneath
but still I give one up to blood
and an admittedly weakened heart

perhaps to bet against himself
again
or to hope beyond the restriction of hope –
for his eye, wounded and killed, spoke his loss

but it was the other eye that was blind
for he did not see it
and thus murdered hope.

A cat’s age came and went,
and he faced his soul again:
a tender thing he thought he had long since buried behind…
but somebody had been about the garden
digging about

and he was older now…

The crystal of truth became whole with his other eye.
