[Dec. 23] [The Hunger Games] Don't You Love the Sea?

Title: Don't You Love the Sea?
Day/Theme: Dec. 23, 2012 "in love with the place"
Series: The Hunger Games
Character/Pairing: Wiress, OC District 4 victor (Theo), Mags, Beetee [slight Beetee/Wiress]
Rating: G
Author's comment: The second meeting of Theo and Wiress. The first was in Liars Like the Summertime.

"Come on," Theo encouraged, holding his hand out to Wiress, "Come on, come on, I want you to see!" The sun was heading down already and it would disappear fast at the time of year. He thought the ocean was beautiful in pretty much every time and season, but when it was too dark to be seen it was sort of difficult to convince someone from outside the district to agree with him. "She'll love it, Beetee," he belatedly realized that it might not be a bad idea to address the man who was her rather protective mentor (even before Wiress' victory, Theo seemed to have established a bad habit of doing things that would leave a poor impression on Beetee).

"If you'll allow it," Mags added on his behalf. Theo had a tendency toward being a bit too eager that she was certain Beetee remembered.

But Wiress was more careful. "…May I?" she asked her mentor, then distractedly, looking back at the party being thrown in her honor, "Do I…?"

"Please," Beetee smiled, "At your pleasure."

She didn't exactly give Theo her hand, but when he grasped it, she didn't pull away. She rose, wobbly in her steel silver light-up heels, and teetered after him. Once they were only black silhouettes against the sinking orange sun, but before they were out of sight, Theo scooped Wiress up like a bride and carried her in a rush down the way toward the water.

Mags laughed at Beetee's stifled scowl. "He's a good boy, Beetee," she insisted, "He's not going to do anything untoward to her!"

He hesitated. "I should have gone with them."

"It's not too late," she replied mildly. "And if you want an excuse, we can always say that I decided to take me for a walk," she offered him her arm. "We're not going to be of much interest to anyone without our kids beside us, are we?"

Beetee mulled it over a moment before linking his arm through hers. "You have a point."

"The ocean does look very beautiful with the colors of the setting sun reflected all across it, you know?" she tried to bring a smile back to his tense and unhappy face. "I can't remember anymore- did you get a good look at it back when you visited after your Games?"

"With Shad." It all came back to him. "And Tyde. Ios was talking to you."

"Oh," she nodded. He was trying to walk at a faster pace than her to catch up with Theo and Wiress, so conjoined near the elbow they moved along in an awkward manner one step on one side and one side and a half on the other. "Did the boys show you a good time?"

"I remember thinking they were a bit rowdy." He raised a hand to shade his eyes against the increasingly bright glint of light on water.

"They're quieter now. They're older."

"Ha ha, well." That returned his smile, "We're all older, aren't we?"

"But you're not too old for that girl," Mags said.

He tried to pretend it came out of the blue. "Now why would you get such an idea, Miss Gaudet?"

"It's perfectly clear to me that you're quite fond of her. …And if she feels the same, well, I think it might be good for both of you."

Theo and Wiress were in sight again, standing on the sand. Wiress was moving her bare toes, letting them sink into the gradually cooling material beneath her feet. Her fancy heels dangled awkwardly in her hand.

Mags drew to a stop with several yards still separating the older pair of victors from the younger ones. Beetee stumbled slightly, not expecting to end his walk there. "Shh," Mags whispered. If they were quiet, they could hear the latest victors speaking to one another over the sound of the waves.

They listened carefully to sort the words into words and not just vague sounds.

"Don't you love it?" Theo asked her.

"I do," Wiress agreed, trailing off, "I would love to…"

She shifted her feet in the sand. Beetee allowed his arm to drop away from Mags'.

"See it with someone in particular?" Theo prompted her, after a strangely long pause that seemed to make him more curious than uncomfortable.

"Beetee," she said.

"Yeah," he answered. He knew what she meant without asking anymore.

The long pause was Theo's now.

"You can, you know," he said at last.

"Now?" she looked away from the water and into Theo's wide, childish eyes.

"Yeah," he repeated himself. "Turn around."

Wiress took his instruction to heart and turned. When she laid eyes on Mags and Beetee just a ways behind them, she started laughing.

Mags gave Beetee a little shove to the shoulder to get him started moving forward. He was laughing too.
