[Dec. 8] [The Hunger Games] Liars Like the Summertime
Title: Liars Like the Summertime
Day/Theme: Dec. 8, 2012 "the respect of a kiss"
Series: The Hunger Games
Character/Pairing: Mags, OC [another District 4 victor], Wiress, Beetee
Rating: PG
Author's Comment: The miscellanea continues. Well, I'm having a good time with this, right? :D Title comes from "Bad Sun" by The Bravery.
As quick as that, being tan was out again in the Capitol. Everyone wanted to be as white as newest victor Wiress. Even for their brief appearance at the District 3 girl's Victory Banquet the stylists were already keen on powdering Mags and Theo up to tone down their natural sun-tinged brownness, which, since no one would be paying any attention to them anyways, Mags considered a complete waste of time.
Theo laughed for the first time since his return to the Capitol when he saw her. "Mags, you look pretty ghastly!"
He had better coloration to take the makeup-induced whitening, but it wasn't exactly a natural look on him either. And after a year of subtle tans predominating the social scene as a result of his victory, a pale Theo was a jarring sight indeed. "You look like the sort of person who goes along with all the newest fashion trends," Mags answered.
"Well, you too!" Theo insisted.
His mentor offered her arm and he accepted. Unless they pressed the point, neither of them would probably have the chance to speak to either Wiress or Beetee that night, but they could watch. Wiress' skin was almost as white as her long, trailing dress, decorated with an intricate mesh of rhinestones and her namesake wires. "I never realized until now," Theo gaped a bit, "She's beautiful."
"It doesn't work out when they're from another district," Mags reminded him. She wasn't about to stop anyone if they wanted to try, but she didn't want to see Theo hurt any worse than he had already been wounded by the Games.
"I want to talk to her," he decided and slipped his hand away from Mags' arm, pushing through the crowd toward the mobbed pair from District 3- the newest victor and her proud mentor.
Mags wondered if this was how a mother would feel if her son rushed off to talk to some girl. On one hand, she wanted to follow after Theo and listen to their conversation- she could always think of something to talk to Beetee about, anyway. On the other hand, she felt she should give him some space- it wasn't as if any of the Capitol folk were about to give him any and her presence would probably only embarrass him.
She held herself back, but paced about as she watched from a distance until she walked straight into Woof, spilling his drink, and then was completely distracted for the next ten minutes as she helped him clean up and apologized to him.
Theo Goff, meanwhile, squeezed all the way up to stand directly in front of Wiress. Her look, as she recognized him, was a bit bemused, "Why are you…?"
"So white?" Theo guessed. "To match you."
"Yes," she said, "That's right."
Theo grinned and offered his hand, presumably to shake. At the last second, he changed course to kiss the back of the hand that Wiress had given him. "Oh," she responded, confused.
"There hasn't been a victor out of District 4 who wasn't cheeky," Beetee shook his head.
