"Hold on, I will get someone who can translate." That was it; that was all the Borginian Apollo knew. Whatever the woman on the other end of the line was saying now, he hoped it meant that she understood. He positioned the phone so that the mouthpiece sat against his shoulder. "Machi," he waved around his computer screen and the stack of law books that blocked a large section of his view of the cluttered office, "Can you take this one?"

"Yes," he nodded and rose from his seat on the other side of the room where he had been reading something Apollo couldn't see well enough to identify. In a wealthier, better-equipped office, there would be another phone and another line and Apollo could transfer the caller to him, but at Wright and Co. Law (and Etc.) the translator was forced to come to the call.

Well, there was one more word or two of Borginian that Apollo recognized. When Machi took the phone, he said "Hello." After that, all bets were off. The strange words rolled briskly off his tongue. He had taken this part-time job at the law office, in part, Apollo thought, because he was so glad for the chance to speak his native language, even if it was only for business.

Sometimes when he was speaking Borginian over the phone, Machi smiled and Apollo wasn't even sure the young man was aware he was doing it. It seemed like he had a whole other personality cloaked in Borginian. When he spoke English (less haltingly than when they had met, but still far from fluently), he was sharp and short-tempered. He didn't seem to like many things. He was happy rarely.

There was a lot to Machi that couldn't be determined through observation alone. His secrets and his true self were locked up in his head- probably all in a language that Apollo doubted he would ever know. Maybe it was because he was so used to unraveling people merely by looking, but behind that stony pokerface, Apollo thought there was someone he could really like and befriend, someone interesting, someone worth the challenge.

Machi juggled the phone while turning the desk calendar around to check for an open space to schedule an appointment. His smile drifted away as he ended the call. "Is want to fight speeding ticket, but do not worry. On appointment day she will bring half-American son."

"Oh, okay.

"You know, we're lucky to have you, Machi."

Machi made a little sound that might have been partially a laugh. "Yes, but the clients are luckier."
