Summary: In which a young man deals with the reality that his brother isn't coming back.

Sleeping Alone

He hated sleeping alone. The feeling of the empty space, the creeping of the quiet, the stillness of the air, all of it unnerved him.  He missed the warmth of another body, even if it tossed and turned and somehow landed with a foot in his face. He missed the subtle little snores that would be denied the next morning. Most of all, he missed the gentle sound of breathing. The small rise and fall of the chest; the proof of life.

That was gone now.

His brother, his twin, was not coming back. The bond between them had been severed when the sword had stabbed him in the chest.

And yet, he carried on. Silently, bitterly, he wished that someone could fill the void in his heart left by the fool who went off to war and left the bed half-empty.
