“Yuusuke! Yuusuke! Play something for me?”

“All right, Hakuei, all right. What would you like to hear?”

      “Doesn't matter. Whatever your mood.”

“Hakuei is so easy,” another teased.

      “You'd know, ne Sugi-chan?”

“All right, children, behave yourselves or I'll kidnap Yuusuke before he can play anything!”

      “Oi, Ren-san!”

      “Ren-san.... Ren-san....”

Ren didn't want to wake; the dream-memories were more pleasant than reality more often that not. In his dreams, he could remember in vibrant color his life at court, friends lost to the distance of time. There, he was Lord Commander General of the Armies of the East. Meanwhile, back in modern Japan, he was a bassist of no repute in an indies band that was going nowhere fast. Some days he wasn't at all sure why he'd listened to Kamui, getting an apartment with the other man. At least it meant he had been reunited with Yuusuke again.

      Yuusuke.... Oh shit!

      “Ren-san....”

“Yeah, yeah, I'm awake,” he mumbled, rolling over and blinking up at the man standing over him. He was taller than the dream - or maybe Ren was shorter - but that gentle smile was exactly the same. His friend had more than a little ability with a guitar, but when he played the violin ... that was when You truly shined.

      “You don't look very awake.”

      “Hnh. Whatcha want?”

“Sorry, thought you'd rather I woke you than Gakuto-san. He's ... in an especially good mood this morning.”

“Any particular reason for spoiling his fun? Cuz to be honest, I've gotten pretty used to his idea of a wake up call.”

“He's in too good a mood this morning,” You said, shrugging as he walked out of the room. Ren sighed and dragged himself out of bed. This wasn't the first time the two soulmates had been born into the same gender. It wasn't even the first time one or the other (or both) had tried denying the bond between them. But for some reason, he had been hoping that this time he might have a slightly easier time of it. It was the twentieth century and, whether the elders liked it or not, Japan was moving forward into the modern world. A time for progressive ideas and progressive thinking. Then again, they would not have been Yuusuke and Kamui - You and Gackt - if they were not being difficult.

“Oh Ren-cha~an!” Gackt trilled, his face falling as he bounced into the room only to find Ren gathering clothes before heading to the shower.

“Mou, how long have you been awake?”

“Not long,” he said with a shrug. “You-san was right, you're awfully ... bouncy this morning. What happened, have a wild time and score last night?”

      “Don't be so crass, Ren-chan.”

“So you did score last night.”

      “REN! I didn't say that!”

“You're not denying it, either. I hope you didn't just leave her lying around the apartment. You-san hates that.”

“Will you shut up about my sex life! I spoke to Mana-sama last night!”

Ren just stopped and stared at his best friend. Surely he'd heard that wrong. What would someone like that want with someone like Gackt? Not that there was anything wrong with Gackt ... except for the part where he paid his share of the bills working in a host club and how was Ren supposed to believe that someone like Mana would be in a place like Gackt's club?

“Right, well, okay ... so what did he say?”

“You don't believe me,” Gackt said, pouting as he crossed his arms over his chest. For a fraction of a second, Gackt was replaced with Kamui as Ren remembered him the first time they'd met. He'd been pouting then, too, though Ren no longer remembered why. Then the moment passed and Ren was back in the present, faced with a hurt friend.

“Ga-kun, you know I love you and I know you're not a liar, but it's a little much to believe. What would Mana-sama want with any of us?”

“I don't know what he heard, but ... he told me his band needs a new vocalist and he wants it to be me. He wants ME, Ren-chan! Can you believe that?”

“After how much we all had to twist your arm to get you to sing for our band? Shit.... Well, I guess this is a good thing, but ... what's going to happen to CAINS:FEEL? What's going to happen to us?”

“Well, I ... I told him I needed some time to think about this. I haven't told You-nii about any of this yet, either. I know it'd mean breaking up the band, but ... it's Mana-sama. I don't know if I can pass up this chance....”

“Then do it,” You murmured from the doorjamb, and Ren could only smile at Gackt's startled yelp. “You're right, this could be your big break. Ren-san and I ... will just have to find our own way.”

“If I do this ... you have to promise me you'll stay,” Gackt said, recovering from his surprise swiftly as he impulsively grabbed You's hand. “I couldn't possibly do this without you at my side, You-nii.”

      “Gakuto-san....”

      “Please....”

Ren could only stand there and watch as the soulmate bond overrode You's judgement. The taller man nodded, murmuring his promise to stay. Gackt's smile was nearly blinding in its warmth, and then he was hugging them both, babbling something about making a phone call before bouncing out of the room.

“What ... what just happened?” You asked, blinking down at him in confusion.

“Camui happened,” Ren replied, smiling as he patted his friend's shoulder. “You get used to it. I'd get used to the idea of being around, too, if I were you. Now that he's found you, he's not going to let you go.”

He glanced back as he left his bedroom, stifling a snicker as he noted the lingering confusion on the other man's face. You would adapt, he always did.
