For their anniversary, he gives her a music box: a mechanical bird covered in jewels. It is beautiful, but it seems to make her sad, even if she tries not to show it. He tells her that it's all right if she doesn't like it, that he isn't any good at choosing presents and she knows that.

Oruha smiles at her husband and assures him that the bird is lovely. But it's such a sad song, she says. If she could only sing one song forever, she would want it to be a happy one.

You are an opera singer, he laughs, don't talk to me about happy songs.

And yet it's different, she explains to him, because she's only pretending. She isn't the heroine with the tragic love; she isn't the one who dies in the end.

She leaves the stage to come home to her husband and live happily ever after.
