“Azalea, I’m trying to help you see,” I say, my words tailing her hopelessly in attempt to cling to her waist-length hair. I’ve been using that word see a lot lately. I don’t know what word to place after it. “Azalea.”

She continues walking away, casting a dismal air around her that makes me worry even more. I speed up to cut her off. We’re standing face-to-face.

“Please,” I beg. “Talk to me.”

The dullness of her eyes fills me with dread, and her sullen gaze appears to penetrate my skull and out the other end. I feel us establish a sort of mental connection. It sounds like a faint low frequency ringing until her voice fills my brain cavities:

“You don’t love me anymore.”

She snatches her eyes away from mine and shoulders past me, going deeper into the woods.
