Author's comment: A potential epilogue to The Sleep of Reason.
My brother's hospital room gradually filled with flowers. It was a project I tended to each and every day- that they had enough water, that their arrangements were pleasing to the eye, that they wouldn't get in the way of the doctors and nurses doing their work, that the old, drooping pieces were thrown away.
I became a familiar figure in the hospital, entering promptly each day at the beginning of visiting hours holding a bouquet of flowers. I bought them here or there, wherever was convenient and allowed me to add to their colors and variety, though several bunches were contributed by our neighbors and my associates.
Lon and the flowers had much in common: living, but silent; pretty, but motionless; well-loved, but ultimately doomed to be short-lived.
Sunflowers, violets, roses, pansies, wisteria, daffodils, irises, and his beloved gerber a daisies. I would continue to bring and arrange them until Lon awoke or, he too, shriveled up and faded away.
