The Birth of the Doll
In a little town in Germany, on a snowy winter’s eve, a toymaker racks his brain. How can he make a living doll? He wants to capture the sense of amazement he felt when he saw the famous scientist unveil his humanoid machine. It was fascinating. She looked and moved just like a real girl. The delicate motions of her hands were so life-like.
Wouldn’t it be nice if toys could be like that, too?
He decides that his design would be simpler. He would rely on stuffing and clockwork. Yes, he could see it now. It would be a girl with a youthful face, a smiling face, and she would dance and sing.
So he worked for many winters, perfecting his craft. Until at last, his masterpiece rose up from the work table and opened her eyes.
She curtsies.
“Hello, sir!” she says with a smile.
The man claps his hands, amazed at his achievement. “Hello, my dear!”
“What is my function?” she asks.
“You’re an artist!” he says. “A dancer! Here I will show you!”
His creation is beautiful as she dances.
“Why are you crying, sir?” she asks
“Because I made you, I really made you,” he says.
