[May 30th] [Perry Mason] Passion and Fury

Title: Passion and Fury
Day/Theme: May 30th - Wild, amoral, reckless, peaceful
Series: Perry Mason
Character/Pairing: Hamilton Burger, Vivalene (OC)
Rating: T/PG-13

Part of the "Missing Scenes from The Broken Ties" series.

Takes place during the break between chapters 7 and 8. This was one of the strangest pieces. Certainly the one in which Vivalene decided to be even nastier and naughtier than previously depicted. Of course, Hamilton will have none of that.

Hamilton gave a tired sigh as he trudged up the walk and unlocked the front door of his house. It had been another long day and night, filled with trying, mostly in vain, to talk with Mignon and others about the truth. About the only good thing that had happened was how well Perry and Della were hitting it off. Meanwhile, he and Paul were having a terrible time. He could almost tangibly feel the strain. And he was sure Paul could, too. Sooner or later their attempted alliance would all fall apart. There was no way they could keep it up.

His eyes widened in stunned disbelief at the sight of a woman’s red silk mini-jacket carelessly tossed on a chair in the living room. “What the . . .” After shutting the door he walked over, picking it up. The object itself was unfamiliar to him, but he recognized its perfumed scent. He had smelled that perfume recently, and far too often for his tastes.

He looked around, now on high alert. “Where are you?” he demanded, the angry edge slipping into his voice. There was no answer, but draped on the railing leading upstairs was what was apparently the wrap that went with the mini-jacket. He stormed over, the first item still in hand. He grabbed the silk wrap too, heading up the stairs with purpose.

It was when he reached the top of the stairs that the alarming truth swept over him. “Oh no,” he breathed in horror. The perfume was strongest in the direction of his bedroom. He ran over, pushing open the half-closed door.

Vivalene, clad in the silk dress that went with the accessories, was stretched out on her stomach at the foot of the bed, propped on her elbows as she watched the doorway. “Well, isn’t this a surprise,” she purred, sitting up.

“Yes, it is—for me!” Hamilton cried. “What do you think you’re doing?! Don’t you have any decency?!”

Vivalene shrugged, casually pulling one of the dress’s shoulder straps halfway off her shoulder. “Decency? What’s that?”

Hamilton was at her side in an instant, grabbing for her arm. “This time you’ve gone too far,” he declared. “Get off my bed and out of my house!”

Instead of going quietly Vivalene rose with slow and careful precision, running her hands down the front of his suit coat. “Oh, there’s no need to say goodbye so soon,” she said.

“I never wanted to say hello!” Hamilton retorted. Still holding the mini-jacket and wrap, he tried to grip her wrists and push her away.

Vivalene just smiled seductively. “You know, I suppose it shouldn’t surprise me that you’re living in a place like this,” she said.

Hamilton frowned. “What are you talking about?”

The wretched woman shrugged. “Oh, it’s quaint, I’ll give you that. You inherited it from your family, didn’t you? Really, flowers in your bedroom?” She glanced at the old wallpaper, then back at him. “You could do so much better.”

“I like it here.” Hamilton’s tone was clipped and annoyed. Vivalene not only had to break into his house and most inappropriately sprawl across his bed, she had to insult his living quarters?

“Yes, I’m sure.” Vivalene was unfazed. “After all, you’re quaint too, aren’t you? And so devoted to your family and friends.”

“Most of us have some kind of ties to other people.” Hamilton was more than ready to escort her out the door. But her next words stopped him in his tracks.

“Of course. And that’s why you’re so miserable now, isn’t it?” Vivalene put on a look of fake sympathy. “I know all about how miserable you are, Hamilton. It is such a pity about all your friends, isn’t it, darling? But you know, it isn’t as though absolutely everything is lost. Why, if you wanted, you could take this situation by the horns and come out on top!”

“And how would I do that?” Hamilton held fast to her wrists, not daring to let go. He stepped back, hoping Vivalene would follow before he had to drag her off the bed.

She did. He noticed in indignation that she had removed her shoes. “It’s very simple,” she told him in all coyness. “Your friends have abandoned you. And Paul never was your friend. Why should you remain loyal to any of them? Take this opportunity to seize the power that could be yours.

“I don’t care about Judge Heyes or Vann or even my sister Flo. But ah, you . . . you are a different story altogether.” Vivalene leaned in closer against him. “I’ve always carried a certain fascination for you. Perhaps you feel the same about me. But regardless of whether you do or not, I can so easily assert your new place in this world. You can rule it with me, if you do one simple thing.” Despite his hold on her wrists, she attempted to stretch up and kiss him.

Hamilton jerked her away. “And I can guess what that is.” He started walking her in determination to the door. “You can just get out of here and go back to wherever it is you’re staying. You’ve got a lot of gall, to even dare show up here and make me this kind of proposal!”

Vivalene pulled away from him, her eyes flashing with anger. “And that’s your final answer?”

“Of course it is. I’ll never taint myself as you want me to.” Hamilton shoved the other parts of her outfit into her hands.

“You’ll be sorry, Mr. Burger,” Vivalene snarled. “Just wait and see. I have so many other horrible things I can do to you. I’ll do them all, and more. And when you’re so broken you beg for death, I won’t let you have it.”

Hamilton just glowered. “Please get your shoes from wherever you took them off.”

“They’re under your bed,” Vivalene spat.

Hamilton stepped out of the way. Vivalene’s eyes were filled with hatred as she stalked inside, bending to fish them out. In a final burst of defiance she refused to place them on her feet when she took hold of them. Instead, still shooting daggers with her eyes, she stalked out and walked down the stairs barefoot.

Hamilton followed her to the top of the stairs to make certain she would leave. If any of the neighbors saw her, Heaven knew what they would think. Probably the worst, considering the way Vivalene had warped all of their minds. But he would have to pay that price.

It was far better than the price Vivalene wanted.

He was out of patience. As soon as Vivalene was outside, slamming the door behind her, he crossed back to his room and slammed that door too.

A series of furious words ran through his mind. Vivalene had already been repulsive to him. Now she had descended to a whole new level of wild, amoral recklessness that even he could scarcely comprehend.

The sight of something shiny on the floor caught his eye. Apparently a barrette had fallen out of Vivalene’s hair at some point. He picked it up, not even thinking before hurling it across the room to strike the opposite wall.

One thing neither he nor Vivalene were in the least right now was peaceful.
