Hamilton was just finishing dinner at Clay’s when he looked up and saw it.

Vivalene, clad in a dark blue silk evening gown, was up at the counter-slash-bar, apparently flirting with a guy on the stool next to hers. Said guy was swaying and grinning stupidly at the creature in front of him. He had obviously had too much holiday cheer and too much Vivalene.

Hamilton shook his head in disgust. He really had no idea what men saw in Vivalene. And yet at the same time, he did.

She could be charming when she wanted. She could be as soft and as sweet as an angel. Men liked that. Hamilton himself was not immune; he simply cared nothing for Vivalene in particular. All of her sweetness and charm hid the devil under her skin. The devil was her true self. She had shown that side to Hamilton repeatedly.

Naturally she never showed it to Perry. Or at least, Hamilton highly doubted she would have. Perhaps Perry knew of her intensely jealous side; Hamilton would have a hard time believing he didn’t. But that could be all. As far as he knew, Perry had not accepted any of what Hamilton had told him. And it hurt, for Perry to glare with that deeply suspicious and disapproving look. Hamilton did not know what to do to help him believe.

Clay had been cool ever since Hamilton had come in, too. From things he had said, Hamilton had gleaned that it was because Hamilton had threatened to have the place closed down after someone had gotten food poisoning and insisted it had come from Clay’s. An investigation had not turned up anything conclusive, but Hamilton was still pushing and Clay was angry. Or that was the story that Vivalene had planted in Clay’s mind, anyway.

Hamilton sighed to himself. If such a thing happened in the true world, of course he would have to order an investigation. And he wondered if Clay would be any less angry there. He prided himself on running a perfectly safe restaurant. Would he think that Hamilton was just pushing the matter out of spite or some other trumped-up reason, as he seemed to here?

Hamilton leaned back, rubbing his forehead. Look at what Vivalene was doing to him. Now he was having doubts about the people he knew in the reality he knew.

Maybe it was doubts that he had always had, deep in his heart. Especially when he knew that Paul had always had something against him. Even after he had tried to change, to reach out to Paul in friendship, it had not worked. It was understandable that he might start doubting others. And he and Clay were not really that close. Still, it was one more nail in the coffin, to have him angry as well.

Vivalene laughed, bringing his attention up again. She was standing, more or less, and leaning against the counter. She ran a finger down the drunk’s cheek.

The poor sap. What could Vivalene want from him? Was he a wealthy businessman? Had he just inherited a fortune?

Or was she just trying to make another conquest? Vivalene enjoyed doing that, just to prove she could.

And she certainly seemed to be succeeding here. Her companion was running a hand up and down her bare arm. Vivalene leaned further in, planting a seductive kiss on his lips.

Hamilton threw his napkin onto the empty plate. It was good that he had already eaten or this scene would have made him lose his appetite. Vivalene was thoroughly sickening. And after the scene she had made in his bedroom last night, trying to tempt him to give in to her, he was more repulsed than ever.

It was unlike him to interfere in such scenes as he saw with Vivalene at the bar, but he had been pushed to his limit over the last few days. As he got up and headed for the door he paused near Vivalene’s latest target. “You’d better watch out,” he said.

“Huh?” The man looked up, squinting at him. “Why?”

Vivalene also looked up, in displeasure. “Why, Mr. Burger,” she purred, venom in every syllable. “Are you disturbing my love life now?”

“We both know you’ll have someone different in a couple of hours,” Hamilton retorted. “The only thing you do with your ‘love life’ is to ruin other peoples’ lives.”

Glancing back at the drunkard he said, “If you have anything she wants, she’ll rob you blind. She may be coming off like a lamb, but her skin is scaly under the soft white layer you were touching. And the scales come with her, wherever she goes.”

“Oh yeah?” The man swayed again. Hamilton doubted he even grasped the meaning of what was being said.

Vivalene glared at Hamilton in faked disgust. “We should have you thrown out of here, darling.”

“I intend to!” Clay exclaimed as he came out. “Mr. Burger, you can’t come around harassing my other customers. So maybe they’re getting a little too friendly for a public display. It doesn’t give you the right to start making up lies.”

More lies was the implication. He thought that the tale of someone getting food poisoning here was a falsehood, encouraged by Hamilton if not started by him.

Hamilton looked to him. “I was trying to save someone else from Vivalene’s cruel games,” he said, his tone clipped. “Don’t worry; I’m leaving now.”

Adjusting his hat with an angry flourish, he stormed out the door.
