It was strange, to see and hear people laughing again, to know that for them all was well. Of course, the majority of them had carried on as they always had, even when Vivalene’s spell had been in full effect. They had not known things were supposed to be different. And if they had been told, they likely would not have believed it.
Although certain things at times quietly amused her, she had rarely ever laughed, even before any of this calamity with Vivalene. And now she particularly doubted that she would find anything so hilarious again any time soon. She was racked with the guilt of someone who had seriously hurt a close loved one.
Oh, he had readily forgiven her, to her amazement and joy as well as shame. She had not done the same for him when she had clung to her faux memories of his betrayal. And her resistance to the idea it had not happened had very nearly resulted in an uncorrectable tragedy. If Vivalene had outright killed Hamilton instead of putting him into an enchanted death, or if the fall had killed him regardless, Mignon never could have let him know that she had finally chosen that leap of faith in him.
She had been bitter towards Vivalene, too. How could she not, considering what the witch had done—and why? Vivalene had focused her petty grievances on Hamilton and had selected him as her personal target because of that. He had suffered and eventually almost died because Vivalene loathed that he had refused to give in to her!
The other day Hamilton had, at Mignon’s request, arranged for her to see Vivalene lying in her current comatose state. Mignon had hoped to put her bitter feelings behind her, maybe even to find a bit of pity for the creature. In the latter she had failed. But her bitterness had ever so slightly eased. Vivalene’s spell had backfired on her, once everyone had rallied around Hamilton in grief and sorrow. In this coma she could not hurt him again. And Mignon had to admit that she was grateful Vivalene had put herself into it.
. . . Although of course she could never be grateful for the circumstances surrounding its inception.
Tonight she would try to put all of that out of her mind. It was the annual staff Christmas party at the Club Caribe, and while she did not feel very festive at the moment, she also felt that she needed the season more than ever. She had invited Hamilton, who had promised to come. Larry was already there, talking and laughing with Agnes. Leaving them, Mignon casually walked toward the door to wait.
Hamilton always tried to be prompt. Mignon smiled as she saw him breezing in. He was a few minutes late and trying to make up for it.
Seeing her, he quickened his pace. “Hello, Mignon,” he smiled as he came closer.
Mignon smiled too, a quiet, but very genuine, smile. “Hello, Hamilton.”
“I’m sorry I’m late,” Hamilton said. He looked somewhat guilty for the offense. “Leon and I were working on a case and it ran overtime.”
“I long ago learned to accept such things.” Mignon moved to go back into the room. “I’ll introduce you to everyone.”
“Alright.” Hamilton kept pace alongside her. He was pleasant and curious, happy to meet the people with whom Mignon associated each day. Agnes he already knew, but most were near-strangers to him.
Mignon took his arm after a moment, signaling that he was her guest. Leading him over to the others, she gave a round of introduction. Hamilton was cordial, as were the staff members and other guests. They would get along fine.
She might not feel like laughing just yet, Mignon silently mused, but perhaps that would come later. Healing was a slow and often painful process. Right now, however, as she spent time with her dear friend, a man she had thought she had lost, she felt sure it would come.
