Vivalene always laughed when she browsed bookstores or surfed the channels on television. Romance was, almost without fail, the best-selling topic in every media outlet. People were so obsessed with having it. And there were few things that amused Vivalene as much as those people. She had her biggest successes with them.
She could not care less about romance, really. It was a means to an end for her. She could put on the façade of a sweet and innocent thing or that of a sultry seductress, depending on her audience, and she could usually draw them into her web and make them believe she was for real.
The only things that frustrated her were when she could not get hold of whatever wealth she had set out to obtain from her poor victims or when someone refused to be taken in by her performances. She liked being the center of attention, the most-desired object of every man’s affections.
While she could not hook Hamilton Burger, she was not having that problem with Lieutenant Tragg. Of course the poor man thought she was his wife, due to the spell, but still.
Sometimes Flo perpetrated the fraud too, such as during many working hours, but it was mostly Vivalene. That suited her fine; she liked being on top of things and seeing firsthand what was happening.
And she did have a prior history with the poor Lieutenant, after all. Lonely and missing his wife, who was dead in the reality he no longer remembered, Tragg had fallen for Vivalene’s charms and her false sincerity. He was smart; the duping had only lasted a few days. But in Vivalene’s twisted mind, even though she had not accomplished her original intentions of getting a policeman on her side, she had still scored a victory. Age did not matter to her. She had tricked boys in their teens and men as old as Tragg. If the fancy ever struck her, she would be willing to go even older than that.
Tragg was sitting in his usual chair in the living room now, complaining of his recent fatigue. And Vivalene was bending beside him, running her hand through his hair.
“You’ve just been overworking yourself lately, Arthur,” she said. “Go to sleep now and you’ll wake up feeling better.”
“I always feel worse,” Tragg grumbled.
But he could not keep himself awake for more than a few more minutes. Once he was asleep Vivalene straightened, going upstairs for the Box locked in her trunk. Within moments she was using its black magic to drain him of more of his life energy.
Yes, romance was overrated. But people foolishly fell for it so often. It could be faked so many times, so many ways. That was how Vivalene used it.
And it was very effective.
