Mignon stood on the front lawn of her home, gazing up into the sky. High above her, the mysterious dome crackled with energy.

She had still not determined what it meant. Obviously the dome was to keep them inside the county limits. It had to be a part of Vivalene’s spell. But the crackling had not been present at first. It was only as time went on that it became more and more prominent.

She wanted to believe that it signified the weakening of the spell. As more people began to accept the idea that Hamilton and Paul were speaking the truth, the entrapments of the black magic could not completely contain them.

But it was still not enough. Their fledgling trust was only the beginning of what needed to be.

She turned, walking up the steps to the porch. At the top, she placed a hand on the square, wooden pillar.

She was in an uncomfortable conundrum. She was fully accepting of the idea that they were under a black magic spell. Considering all that she had been seeing over the past days, and her belief that such things were real, it made perfect sense to her.

And yet the memory of what had happened between her and Hamilton went too deep. She could not make herself believe that was only a false remembrance. It was so real—the words, the hurt. . . .

An ironic and sad smirk played on her lips. She was struggling with that perhaps as deeply as Hamilton fought with himself over the issue of magic being real.

The smirk died as she caught a glimpse of the crackling dome reflected in the front window. Perhaps, as long as she clung to those supposedly untrue events, the spell never could be destroyed.

But was she strong enough to let go, to take a leap of faith?

She closed her eyes in regretted resignation. Perhaps, in the end, she was not as strong as she had thought.

Perhaps it was Hamilton who was the stronger one between them. Forced to face one of the things he most doubted in the entire world, he had taken that leap of faith and was willing to consider the possibility, even to work towards finding a counter-spell with white magic if necessary.

“I’m sorry, Hamilton,” she said under her breath. “When you’ve needed me most, I haven’t been there.”

She wanted to change that.

With a newfound determination, she headed across the porch to the front door.

It wasn’t long after that when Judge Heyes’ men arrived and attacked Larry. And that immediately altered all of Mignon’s well-intentioned plans.

No matter how badly she felt for Hamilton, no matter how much she wanted the world reset as it was supposed to be, Larry’s life was still the most important thing to her. She could not risk it, no matter the cost.
