As soon as the earthquake stopped and the barrier shattered, seven-year-old Howie ran down the marble stairs to the lifeless body at the bottom. He knew what was surely the truth, yet he could not bring himself to accept it. He begged and pleaded for Mignon and Mr. Mason to tell him otherwise, but they could not. Their sad eyes and voices said it all.

Howie dropped to his knees next to Mr. Burger, unable to control the sobs. He had been kept apart from his godfather for so long, his parents refusing to let them be together after Mr. Burger had criticized and argued with Mignon. Mr. Burger had insisted it hadn’t even happened. Howie’s parents refused to believe the stories he and Mr. Drake had told.

But Howie believed.

Now the bad guys were all defeated and captured. But it wasn’t like the movies, where everything was okay at the end. Nothing would ever be okay anymore. Mr. Burger was lying so still and so cold, and he didn’t move no matter how Howie pled with him to wake up. He was dead.

Howie fell forward, clutching Mr. Burger’s suit coat as he sobbed on the man’s chest. He remembered how they had met in the past, when someone had been haunting his family home and Mignon had gone to Mr. Burger for help in finding out who it was. He and Mr. Burger had grown so close on that case. And at the conclusion his parents had asked Mr. Burger to be his godfather.

“You’re not supposed to be dead, Mr. Burger,” Howie cried. “You have to wake up and be okay. You have to!”

He trailed off in sorrow. Everyone was mourning their loss. Even Mr. Drake looked distraught.

Howie slumped against Mr. Burger’s shoulder, longing for the limp arm to pull around him in a comforting hug.

It was a vain wish.
