Series: Perry Mason

“What do you think, Perry darling?”

Vivalene spoke over her shoulder as she watered the small pot on her desk. Her employer glanced over from the law book he was engrossed in.

“What do I think about what?”

Vivalene set the watering can down and straightened, turning to face him. It was so deliciously devilish, really. Perry had only been her boss for less than a day. And yet, in his newly implanted memories he believed she had been with him as long as Della Street had in reality. He didn’t have a clue.

“Why, about what I was telling you, of course,” she said. “The opera? I have an extra ticket for tonight.”

“Oh. Yes.” Perry sighed, closing the heavy volume. “I’m sorry, Vivalene; I don’t think I can get away tonight.”

She pouted. “You’re always so busy, devoting every waking moment to your job. Take a break for once! Work from nine to five, like normal people.”

Perry smiled that frustrating smile he always used when a woman was presenting him with a loaded statement. “Why, but I’m not like normal people. You knew that when you started to work for me. In fact, you said that was one of the attractions of the position.”

“Yes, yes, I know,” Vivalene said with impatience. “And it was true. That doesn’t mean, however, that I wouldn’t like to see you have some fun once in a while. It couldn’t hurt your case.”

“Who knows.” Perry headed into his office, with the intention to cross into the law library and replace the tome. Over his shoulder he said, “For me there’s nothing more fun than cracking a complicated case and watching an innocent party be set free.”

Vivalene observed his departure, not bothering to call him back. “I suppose that’s why you’ve left Della Street hanging all these years,” she muttered under her breath. “In the end, you really have no interest in committing yourself to anyone other than a client and anything other than a case. This spell changes memories, not personalities.”

She turned back to the potted plant and took up a pair of tweezers. Reaching into a small bottle, she extracted a bug and dangled it over the plant. It snapped, nearly taking the tweezers out of her hand as it grabbed its lunch.

Vivalene smirked to herself. It was no matter. Even if she could not interest the great Perry Mason romantically, she had him ensnared in her trap. And that was more than enough to please her at the moment.

Everything was going according to plan.

“My moment is a flower,” she mused, sitting on the edge of her desk. She fingered a leaf, quickly drawing her hand back when the plant started to turn with interest. She chuckled under her breath. “A very deadly flower indeed.”
