[May 5th] [Perry Mason] Kiss from a Viper
Title: Kiss from a Viper
Day/Theme: May 5th - Your hour is a stone
Series: Perry Mason
Character/Pairing: Hamilton Burger, Vivalene (OC)
Rating: K+/PG
I wish I'd realized this before the start of the month, but the themes are perfect for that "Missing Scenes from The Broken Ties" blurb set I was talking about. That being the case, if I don't get to any themes on time, hopefully I can make it up on Amnesty Day.
The basic plot of The Broken Ties: Several enemies have unleashed a black magic spell over Los Angeles County, resulting in almost everyone forgetting the right way of things. Some people have been displaced, while others simply have incorrect memories but keep their current jobs. Only Hamilton and Paul know the truth. Convincing everyone else is quite a challenge.
This scene takes place presumably around chapter 4 or 5.

Vivalene was typing away at her—Della’s—desk when Hamilton walked into the office. She looked up, her lips curling in a cruel smirk when she saw the man she hated. Her expression did not change when Hamilton stalked in determination to her desk.
“Mr. Mason isn’t in, darling,” she purred.
“I know; he’s in court,” Hamilton countered. “Larry Germaine is prosecuting. My business is with you.” He placed his hands on the desk. “What have you done with Della?”
Vivalene leaned back, brushing her fluffy red hair over her shoulder. “Why concern yourself over that interfering troublemaker?” she returned. “Mr. Mason doesn’t remember her. And as far as I’m concerned, that’s for the better.”
Hamilton’s eyes flashed. “If anyone’s an ‘interfering troublemaker’, it’s you,” he snapped. “What exactly are you trying to do?” He straightened to his full height. “If all you wanted was to make sure you didn’t get convicted for attempted murder, you’ve taken it too far. You’ve put the entire county of Los Angeles at your mercy!”
Vivalene’s smirk only deepened. “Oh, but darling, that wasn’t my only purpose.”
“Then what?” Hamilton demanded.
“I wanted to have my revenge on you.” Vivalene rose, relishing the look of utter astonishment and disbelief now coming over Hamilton.
“All of this, to get at me?!” Hamilton gasped. “Why?”
“I detest you.” Vivalene came around the desk, stepping closer, ever closer, to her target.
Hamilton stood his ground. “Because I was prosecuting you? You wouldn’t be the first to hate me for that.”
“That’s only a minor quibble, really.” Vivalene stopped when she stood practically nose-to-nose with him. She reached up to run her hand down his cheek. When he immediately grabbed her wrist and held it away, the venom in her visage increased. “Because of that. Because you refuse to give in to me.”
“I can’t be the only one with any sense,” Hamilton retorted.
“No,” Vivalene agreed. “But when I take an interest in something, I get hold of it one way or another. You have been consistent in your rejection of me, both now and three years ago.” She pulled her wrist away from him. “And I’m going to see that you suffer for each and every grievance you’ve dealt to me. Everyone who cared about you has been given false memories of you and things you’ve done to them. They all hate you now. And the only one who knows the truth hates you too.” Hamilton faltered. “You know it’s true, don’t you. Paul Drake has always held nothing but the utmost contempt for you.”
Hamilton shook it off. “Nevermind that. Do you mean to tell me that you’re doing all of this just because you feel you’re a woman scorned?!”
Vivalene’s devilish smile widened. “No,” she said. “Not just because of that. But you should know, darling, that you have no hope of winning this war. You and Mr. Drake will never be able to get along. He doesn’t trust you. Even though things aren’t too bad right now, just wait and see. They’ll all crumble before too much time goes by.” She started to lean in. “Soon you’ll feel the hopelessness begin to set in. You’ll be all alone. Paul will abandon you to go it by himself. And all the others think you’ve done terrible things to them. They won’t listen to someone they despise. Your hour of reigning is over. It’s nothing more than a dead stone that will strike you in the heart.”
Her lips never had a chance to so much as brush against his. He pushed her away in anger. “And you think I’ll sink so low that I’ll let you touch me? Even kiss me?
“Maybe Paul and I won’t be able to work together. And maybe no one will listen to me. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to give up now. I’m going to at least try. And somehow, even if it kills me, I’m going to see that your empire falls. You won’t control any part of this world!”
He turned, storming out of the room. Vivalene stood glowering after him, clenching her professionally manicured fingers into a fist.
“That’s exactly what will happen to you in the end, darling,” she snarled at the spot where he had been. “It will kill you. And then, even in death, I’ll have you.” She started to smirk again. “No one commits atrocities against me and gets away with it.”
