The Lost Art of Chivalry

Sanosuke didn't know how it had come to this.

The night had started pleasantly enough. Chatting and catching up with friends he hadn't seen in seven years couldn't have been anything else, and the sake was good.

Then he had said… He couldn't even remember what he had said. Some mild insult, certainly, that he had directed at Kaoru but that anyone who knew him would never have taken seriously.

The thing was, four-year-old Kenji didn't know him.

And four-year-old Kenji was very much his parents' son and, as such, fiercely loyal and protective.

He hadn't missed a beat and had stepped up to defend his mother's bruised honor.

"Don't call Okaa-san that, you rooster-head!"

Now Sanosuke sat frozen while his friends were doubled over laughing and Kenji alternated between looking at his parents in confusion and glaring at him.

Rooster-head. Megumi had not used his old nickname all night and Kenji couldn't have heard it before. The boy had spontaneously called him that.

They would never let him live it down.
