[Oct 2] [J-rock] Fragrance
Title: Fragrance
Day/Theme: October 2: Fortuna
Fandom: J-rock -- HYDE x Yoshiki (NOT a pairing notation!)
Characters: Hyde, Yoshiki
Rating: G
Summary: Contemplation by a riverbank.
Notes: Another hit of Eien AU fic. Since the cues are pretty weak, setting is turn of the century. More character identity spoilers for Eien ~Bound~, but inasmuch as no one's reading, it doesn't really matter, does it?
~*~*~
Hideto watched the flow of water under the bridge and sighed. He needed a cigarette, but his case was empty. Of all the days to have run out....
“You did the right thing, Hi-kun.”
“You always say that, Boss,” he sighed, pushing a hand through black hair in need of another haircut. Nor did he bother sparing a glance for the man beside him, already knowing what he would see. Yoshiki would be impeccable as always, not so much as a spot of dirt on either kimono or haori. Unlike himself. The very perfection would have attracted almost as much undue attention as the taller man’s sun-bright blond hair, so he supposed it was just as well that they were invisible to mortal eyes. Or rather, unnoticeable - the people of Kyoto flowed around them without seeing, as if they were pillars of stone.
“I only say it when it’s true, Hi-kun. You did the right thing.”
“Then why do I feel like shit?”
“Taking a child is always difficult....”
“Not the word I'd use, but it works,” he replied with a snort. “I really hate this job sometimes, you know?”
“If you did not, then you would no longer have the compassion necessary.”
There was nothing he could say to that. Compassion was a shinigami's greatest strength ... but also his most telling weakness. For all that Hideto worked hard to cultivate a reputation for being a bastard, there were times when he hated what he had to do.
“Think of it this way,” the elder shinigami said, joining him at the bridge's rail and offering him a cigarette. “Even we are subject to patterns and forces beyond ourselves. The most seemingly pointless event can later prove to be of critical importance.”
He couldn't think of anything to say to that, either. Which was perhaps a little too typical. Sighing, he subsided into silent smoking. Perhaps there was some cosmic meaning in it all, but at the moment, he couldn't image what. That girl should have lived another half dozen decades or more.
“Her life was not cut short without reason, Hi-kun. She was born too soon. She belongs to another era, in a time when she can dance the moon and touch the stars.”
“You're not helping anything, Boss.”
“You'll see, Hi-kun,” the elder murmured. “You'll see.”
