The crimson liquid was soaking through the white of the snow when she stumbled across the scene. She stared, aghast, as her eyes followed the trail to see where it led. A body lay sprawled in the midst, the arms and legs splayed in all directions. The face was turned away from her. Rescue crews were rushing to the scene, ignoring her as they moved to give aid to the hapless person. She stepped out of their way, awkward as she moved with the snowshoes.

“What happened?” she gasped in horror.

“We’re not sure yet, Miss,” one worker said over his shoulder. “A couple of witnesses said he got in the way of a daredevil doing his stunts. He swerved off-course and crashed.”

Mignon gripped her poles. “Do they know whom?” she demanded. If Jack had inadvertently caused this, he would be devastated. She knew that without a doubt. And she also knew that he was one of the biggest daredevils on these slopes.

“The ski patrol has him in custody,” was the reply. “Now please leave us, Miss. We have to work on helping this kid.”

Only a boy. Mignon moved to turn and leave, swallowing hard. “Do you know if he’ll live?” she asked, both wanting and dreading the answer.

“Too soon to tell,” the man said.

Mignon nodded. She would know in a few minutes if Jack were involved. She shuffled away, heading for the top of the slope.

“Mignon!”

She looked up with a start. Jack was coming towards her, waving with a ski pole. Hamilton was not far behind him. She breathed a sigh of relief.

“Mignon, are you alright?” Hamilton exclaimed as they met each other. “We heard someone was hurt over this way.”

“It wasn’t me,” Mignon said. “It’s a boy, injured by a daredevil’s stupidity.”

Jack frowned. “I’d like to have a talk with him, whoever he is.”

“I was afraid it was you.” Mignon spoke firmly and matter-of-factly, not raising her voice but making her point very plain.

“Me?!” Jack cried. “I’ve never got anyone hurt before.”

“Of course you’d never do it on purpose,” Mignon said. “I’m sure this other person didn’t, either. But it could have happened just as easily with you as with anyone else. The antics you pull on these mountains are frightening.”

“I told you she’d speak up about it sooner or later,” Hamilton said to Jack, who exhaled in exasperation. “And I told you she wouldn’t like it.”

Jack looked to Mignon. “I’m careful,” he objected. “Mignon, you can’t expect me to just give it up!”

“I wish you would,” Mignon shot back. “But I know you won’t.

“I just hope that it isn’t you the ski patrol is chasing down someday. Or you lying bleeding in the snow!”

Jack exchanged a look with Hamilton. This was between the two of them; Hamilton did not intend to interfere. But from his expression, he felt it needed to be resolved right away. And Jack honestly wasn’t sure how to do that. This was the first time he had seen Mignon so upset.

“Mignon, I never even do any crazy stunts unless no one’s near me,” Jack said. “I do everything I can to make sure no one gets hurt.”

“Including yourself?” she returned.

“Including myself,” Jack nodded. “I’m really sorry about what you had to see, Mignon. I wish it’d been me or Hamilton who found the poor kid, if it had to be any of us. Why don’t we call it a night for now and head back to the lodge?”

Mignon considered the proposition. “I’d like that,” she said.

“And maybe next time you’d rather just stay there instead of coming out,” Jack said.

“No,” Mignon replied. “No, I’ll still come out.” She looked from Jack to Hamilton. “If anything ever happens to either of you, I want to know right away. Even if that means stumbling across you in the snow.”

“But . . .” Jack trailed off, finally conceding with a subdued nod. “Alright.”

Hamilton nodded in approval. Jack had learned what Hamilton had already come to know.

When Mignon made up her mind, there was no point trying to change it.
