Hamilton had always felt that Perry worked too hard. Of course one had to devote a certain amount of time to their career. And sometimes Hamilton found himself burning the midnight oil when he had some very important cases to tend to. But he had never seen anyone go at it the way Perry did.

“Honestly, Perry, I don’t understand,” Hamilton commented one very late night. He had stopped by on his way home only to find Perry and Della running around like it was mid-morning.

“You don’t understand what?” Perry returned, munching on a small carrot-stick from a smorgasbord Della had brought back from the deli.

“Why things like that happen.” Hamilton pointed at the carrot-stick. “Why don’t you take Della out for a normal dinner more often?”

“You know,” said Perry as he glanced up, “half the time when I do, something happens that interrupts it.”

“That’s right,” Della nodded. “Sometimes we have a more relaxing time just staying in.”

Hamilton shook his head in disbelief. “That doesn’t look very relaxing,” he said, eyeing Perry’s intense stare into the screen of his laptop. And Della’s various open files and folders.

Della smiled. “It can be, Mr. Burger. Perry is right in his element here. He’s never happier than when he’s hard at work unraveling a difficult case.”

“I can believe that,” Hamilton said. “But what about you?”

Della shrugged, turning her attention to the files and folders. “Oh, I make sure to let Perry know when I’ve had enough of going to dinner with a case,” she said.

“She does, too,” Perry said.

“Well, good,” Hamilton said. “I wouldn’t want to think you were neglecting your loyal secretary, Perry.”

“Hamilton, I’m curious,” Perry said. “Does Leon ever get tired of working overtime?”

Hamilton raised an eyebrow. “I don’t usually keep him or Miss Miller around as late as you keep your people,” he said. “But if you’re trying to get around to asking whether I’ve ever taken Leon to dinner, the answer is Yes. Miss Miller, too.”

“Good,” Perry smiled.

“And speaking of dinner, I’m meeting Mignon at the Club Caribe tonight,” Hamilton continued. “I guess I’ll see the both of you later.”

“Have a good time,” Perry said.

“Tell Mignon Hello from us,” Della added with a smile.

“I’ll be sure to,” Hamilton said.
