Hamilton’s forgiveness, which he had offered so freely after how Mignon had hurt him while under the influence of Vivalene’s spell, left her both disbelieving and awestruck. And as he held her close, the feel of his firm arms around her finally brought her emotions to the surface. Abandoning her aloof shield, she collapsed in his embrace, clutching at him in joy as well as desperation.

He was alive. He was alive. After seeing him lying so silent and still and limp on the floor, it was almost incomprehensible that he was breathing, conscious, able to reassure her that he was alright and he did not blame her. It defied logic. It defied everything she knew she had seen. It had been shining sunlight into her world after it had shattered into countless tiny pieces.

She still blamed herself. It was too soon to expect her to not. But perhaps in time she would be able to heal, with Hamilton alive and well. If he had been truly dead, she never would have been the same.

She never could be now, for that matter. She had seen a side of herself she could not stand. In the future she wanted to be a better friend. She wanted to be everything she had not been while Hamilton had struggled under the weight of almost everyone turning against him.

“Hamilton,” she choked out. She was still clutching at him, her fingers digging into the material of his suit jacket. “Oh Hamilton. . . .” There was so much she wanted to say, so much that needed to be said, but it was all lodged in her throat.

And what was it Hamilton had just told her, when she had said she could not remember telling him she loved him?

He had known she loved him. Some things didn’t have to be said in words.

Then, perhaps, he understood what she was trying to tell him now.

From the way he held her so comfortingly, she felt that he did.
