Mignon had long ago ceased to fully keep her mind on her dance while she was performing. She had memorized every step. Hence, her mind often wandered as she danced for the patrons of the Club Caribe.
It had been her earliest dream to be a dancer. While her family had struggled to support themselves and keep their house, she had skipped and twirled through the modest rooms. If she could dance for a living, she often said to herself, she would have the career she always wanted and be able to help her family at the same time. She had hated assisting her father and brothers with their small family business. The only positive aspect for her had been the interaction it afforded between them. But she had nevertheless continued longing to do as she pleased. She had not had a chance to try until her twelfth year.
Her family had always been proud of her, but at the same time they had been surprised and even a bit concerned when she had become successful so young. She had not made much money those first years, but her connections and prowess had enabled her to eventually move up the ladder and earn enough to really help, as she had longed to do.
Still, she had seen things in those years that no child should ever see. She had been an adolescent in an adult’s world, and having lied about her age and looking older than she was, she had seen far more than she might have if her true age had been known. She would not recommend such a path to any young girl or boy.
She would also not change her choices in life. Her life was what it was because of what she had done. She had helped her family when they had been in dire straits after her father’s accident. Who knew what might have happened to them if she had not taken that road?
Or what might have happened to Larry? It was only because she had already been a well-established performer that she had been able to make a successful comeback once Jack had passed on.
Of course, things would have been different had she not made that decision. Hamilton had offered to help, and despite not wanting to accept charity, Mignon would have for Larry’s sake. But first she had decided to try dancing again.
. . . And if she had never tried dancing long ago in the first place, she might have never gone to Los Angeles nor met Hamilton. That was something she did not even want to think about.
Dancing had always carried her through the tough times in life. And she still enjoyed it as much as she had as a small girl. The sight of the nightly audiences in the Club Caribe still gave her a little thrill.
She prayed, however, that she would never again have to turn to dancing to deal with a tragedy. She did not want to see anyone else she loved have to suffer.
