They were at a standstill. Vivalene was lunging at Hamilton, holding the cursed box. Mr. Vann was holding Howie captive, threatening to harm him if they made a move. Paul was restraining Tragg, who was fighting Vivalene’s mind-control—and had been trying to fight Hamilton and Paul while under it. All the others were watching helplessly behind the clear barrier, unable to get through to offer assistance at all.

Perry, Della, and Steve were at the bottom of the marble staircase. Andy and Mignon had come around the back stairs and were instead at the upper level’s invisible wall, with an all-too-clear view of what was happening at the front landing. What they witnessed continued to haunt Mignon weeks later.

Could an eternity happen in a matter of seconds? Or were the seconds just that—instants that were gone as quickly as they came?

“You see?” Vivalene purred as she flew at Hamilton. He was dazed, just getting up from Tragg attacking him. “I knew Arthur would come through for me in the end. You’ve still failed. And now you’ll discover another use for this box. I’ve been using it to kill Arthur very slowly. I can also use it to kill very fast.”

Hamilton tensed, reaching to push her away. But she was already there before he could do a thing. Her lips were upon his, devoid of any feelings of love or kindness. Lust, revenge, hatred. . . . He felt all of those baser emotions, and more, from her touch.

The kiss of death.

He had only seconds to process it. At the same moment she was kissing him, she was opening the lid on the box. That dark, truly forbidden box that, through Vivalene’s and Mr. Vann’s manipulations, had been responsible for all of their problems. The dark energy inside, raw as a blast of purple electricity, assaulted his body.

And for Hamilton Burger, his world ended in a burst of fire.
