[Feb. 1] [Suikoden III] Cold Earth

Title: Cold Earth
Day/Theme: Feb. 1, 2012 "The Earth is frozen solid, like a heart that will not love"
Series: Suikoden III
Character/Pairing: Sasarai
Rating: PG
Author's comment: Enough sort of depressing future scenarios, self.

It was under the auspices of Bishop Sasarai that after hundreds of years the capital of a much-diminished Harmonia moved from Crystal Valley to Teqal (which was much to close to Paquin as far as many secondary-tier government officials were concerned, but twenty years on there was little that could be done about it at this point). However, the oldest, most famed cleric in the country did not make the move along with the government. Crystal Valley was fading rapidly, but it seemed he preferred it that way. The schools remained, and remnants of the old noble families that hadn't survived the transition from one mode of government to the other with their power and fortunes intact. The books from the great Crystal Palace library (those ones that escaped the fire) had made the move, the relics, the paintings, the records. But not Sasarai. The Temple complex withered around him, yet the bishop remained behind.

He was not incommunicado, though he rarely reached out to anyone who did not write to him first. He kept his own cote of nasal birds (he had always liked birds), but the gardens that had once been both a delight and a wonder to everyone who saw them were now left bare. It was generally imagined that this dearth of greenery within the former Temple District existed at the bishop's whim. At least weeds should have grown there naturally, and perhaps a few of the ancient, tangled wisteria vines should have managed to retain a little life in their branches considering the depths reached by their magnificent systems of roots. But the earth remained dead, the bishop's gentle heart long gone cold.

Fabricce Orsini brought his bishop a potted Josephine rose as a gift, using Sasarai's upcoming birthday as an excuse for something he wanted to give anyway.

Though Sasarai smiled and and seemed happy to accept the gift, on Fabricce's next visit from Teqal the rose remained where the bishop had chose to display it- the entire plant withered and dead.
