[Dec. 11] [Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice] When You Leave Me, I'll Go Back To Hide.

Title: When You Leave Me, I'll Go Back To Hide.
Day/Theme: Dec. 11, 2011 "even though your heart is breaking"
Series: Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice
Character/Pairing: Machi, Daryan
Rating: PG

There would be no apologizing for what he had done to Daryan. Not considering what Daryan had been willing to do to him. Not that Daryan would accept an apology even if he offered it.

The crazy, clever, crude, selfish, demanding, stubborn, cruel- he could never hold enough words in his mind to describe him properly- rock-star/detective was being hauled away. He was looking straight at Machi. Could he see through the mask of those big, dark glasses? He was still yowling. He was giving Machi the finger (Him, Daryan, the same person who had explained the meaning of that gesture to Machi during one of their various discussions of American culture).

And what was the proper response to all that? To smile because he had won (though if things had gone right with Daryan, he would have won bigger, he wouldn't have had to suffer any of these indignities, he wouldn't be facing down a juvenile sentence) and Daryan had lost (and if his victory was mixed, there was still certainly no doubt that Daryan had lost. One hundred percent. Completely)? To flip him off in return?

There was one thing, at least, that Machi would not do. He was no child. He was no victim. He would not cry. Not in sorrow over what he had lost. Not in relief over what he had narrowly missed. ...even though Lamiroir was disappointed in him...even though he saw now he was not as wise as he had foolishly thought he'd been...even though Daryan was leaving now to await sentencing (a probable life-long sentence) and probably busy hating him forever...

And between all these things his heart was breaking. But he held his head up and kept his face neutral as he stared back at Daryan. He balled up all his relief and satisfaction to return as a bright, beaming smile to Apollo Justice.

He was good at putting on masks to hide his true emotions. It was as easy as donning his familiar dark glasses.
