[Dec. 10] [Suikoden III] Sign of the Times

Title: Sign of the Times
Day/Theme: Dec. 10, 2011 "the growing category of the world's ubiquitous objects"
Series: Suikoden III
Character/Pairing: Sasarai & Lucas Orsini (way post-game here)
Rating: G

Sasarai and Lucas were sitting at their usual table at their usual cafe, but the workers they thought of as their favorites- a pair of waitresses who had enjoyed flirting with them in the past- were long gone. That was life. Some things changed; some things stayed the same.

A gaggle of schoolgirls walked by, laughing and teasing one another. Their school clothes were the traditional sort favored by the well-reputed academies. It was the bangles hanging around various necks and wrists that caught Sasarai's attention. "Lucas, look at that," he pointed at their jewelry- orange and black bracelets in a pattern of triangular stripes or arrows, beads shaped like chestnuts and beads shaped like over-sized sunflower seeds, colored threads and tinted feathers. "Is it just me, or do those accessories look almost...Karayan?"

"That's because they are Karayan," Lucas grinned, "Or at least they're meant to look that way."

"...Is that...popular?" Sasarai couldn't take his eyes off the girls until they vanished from sight. That addition of a Grasslands-style touch to their conservative Harmonian garb was...puzzling.

"It's kind of an on-going fad, I gather. Even some of the girls who work with my sister have picked up on it?"

"Fifty and sixty year old nuns?" Sasarai couldn't help it if his mouth hung open a bit in shock. They weren't traditionally the most fad-hopping demographic in Harmonia.

"Even them," Lucas nodded solemnly. "I guess it just shows how removed everyone feels from our last incursion into the region."

"When did I become so out of touch with the times?" Sasarai wondered.

Lucas responded to him with a sly smile, but was more polite than to remark on the high probability that Sasarai had always been as oblivious to trends within the general populace of Harmonia as he was now.

"...Yes, I suppose I've always been somewhat out of the loop," Sasarai admitted with a smile and a sigh.

"Well, uh, it's good to know that you realize that," Lucas laughed. It was a sort of awkward situation to be in. He wanted to be free about showing his amusement, but Sasarai was a sort of gentle soul. He didn't want to come off toward him as uncaring or impolite.
