[Dec. 8] [Fullmetal Alchemist] Mothers of Infamous Men

Title: Mothers of Infamous Men
Day/Theme: Dec. 8, 2011 "the mothers of famous men"
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Character/Pairing: Ed, Mrs. Bradley & Mrs. Kimblee
Rating: PG

It was Ed who introduced Lydia Kimblee and Teresa Bradley after Mrs. Kimblee lost her husband. For some reason, following a visit to Central City, it had dawned on him that the two women might enjoy one another's company. They were widows of about the same age. They had both lost sons around the time of the Promised Day. ...and, if nothing better, he knew they both liked tea and might like having someone new to share a cup with.

It was a small detour to continue further south on his usual trip from Central to Rush Valley down to Fernburg to speak with Mrs. Kimblee. She was lonely and it showed. Whether or not Mrs. Bradley would agree to an unknown visitor was a little more up in the air. There was an aura of caution around her as she hid away in her manse just outside the capital raising the Homunculus Pride with as much care and kindness as she could muster.

"Whose mother was she?" Teresa asked. Kimblee? She thought she had heard the name before, but she couldn't quite place it.

"Solf Kimblee," Ed said. He thought he had said so earlier in the conversation, but under these circumstances he wouldn't gripe about repeating himself. "He was a State Alchemist. He did some special work for your husband...and your son."

"The Red Lotus," Teresa remembered, "Though I only met him once. ...So, his mother...what does she know about what happened that day?"

There was only one day she could be referring to. Oh. Ed flinched. He hadn't thought about that. "She knows what everyone else knows. Nothing about the homunculi or any of that. I don't know if it's what I would've told her, but apparently Mustang got in touch with her sometime after the coup and told her that Kimblee- uh, Solf- had died in the service of your husband. ...Like he was a good guy in the end. But she's not dumb. She knows all about his war crimes, so I'm sure she took it with a grain of salt."

"I see. ...And she wants to meet me?"

"She really cheered up when I mentioned the possibility to her," Ed hoped to play on the former first lady's compassion, "Her husband passed away about two months ago and she hasn't been in good spirits."

"Oh," Teresa was unable to disguise her empathy. She still thought about King every day. "...I imagine her schedule is flexible then? Can I set a date?"

"We're sitting in front of the calendar right now," Ed grinned, turning to give Daniel and Lydia a bold thumbs-up.
