[Dec. 7] [Tales of Legendia] (You're Lucky You've Got It) Flaunt It!

Title: (You're Lucky You've Got It) Flaunt It!
Day/Theme: Dec. 7, 2011 "her best friend is a sun dress"
Series: Tales of Legendia
Character/Pairing: Shirley & Fenimore (slight Fenimore/Shirley)
Rating: PG-13

"I don't know, Fenimore," Shirley twisted one of the thin straps of the white and sea green sun dress around a nervous finger, "It might be nice to wear something a little lighter now that summer's heating up, but no one else in the village dresses like this..."

Had Shirley thought about why that might be the case? She really was naive. There weren't many young women who would reasonably want to dress this way in the first place in Maurits' burgeoning safe haven on the Legacy and as far as Fenimore knew they shared her feeling of having something to hide. Shirley's limbs, on the other hand, were as pale and pure as her heart. She considered stripping off the outermost layer of her clothing, or at least rolling one of her sleeves up past the elbow. Shirley would understand if she saw her scars. ...But that would be painful- for both of them. Maybe she could make her point through teasing instead. "Somehow I have a feeling that the Orerines have their own version of 'if you've got it, flaunt it.'"

"Hee hee, it's really not true you know," Shirley laughed, "That all Orerines women are easy. It's the same as with us."

"That's not what I meant!" Fenimore laughed despite herself, giving Shirley a playful shove, "But you're pretty, Shirley! And you know it! So you could be comfortable and you'd be giving the rest of a treat by relaxing and letting your natural beauty show through."

"Okay," Shirley agreed, "But only on one condition."

Well, that was progress. "Let me hear it."

"I won't believe you if you tell me this is the only sun dress roughly your size in the whole village. I want you to wear one too!"

Fenimore instinctively raised her hands to touch her arms. Just thinking of the marks left there by bindings and lashes left her feeling uncomfortably bare. "...I don't know about that."

"But, Fenimore, it's too much to do this all of the sudden by myself! I need some moral support," Shirley pouted. The expression she put on was just too cute to be turned down outright.

Fenimore slowly slid one long, white sleeve up over her forearm, where some smaller markings showed, up past her elbow to where the unmistakable indications of torture snaked across her skin. "I suppose you could probably hear what Vaclav's men did to me..."

For a second, Shirley's mouth opened up in a perfect little "o," before reforming into tight-set line that Fenimore recognized as her most determined face. "That's all the more reason that you should wear a sun dress with me! You're not the one who did those bad things, Fenimore! You should let your arms show because you shouldn't be ashamed of being a survivor! And because those scars don't make you any less pretty either!"

"...You- you really mean that?" Fenimore stammered, although it didn't seem to her that Shirley could say anything with such force that she didn't mean sincerely through and through.

"Yes, I do!"

Shirley was only lovelier when she showed her strength. If she could muster this much compassion for just one of her people, how much more amazing would be the power she would wield as Merines when she extended her kind thoughts over all of them? Even in the small time they'd been acquainted, she had seen Shirley grow so much. ...And Fenimore had to admit- Shirley had changed her a bit too. "Okay," she agreed, "But only if we wear them together. ...I guess maybe it was a little much to ask you to be the only one when I wouldn't be willing to dress that way on my own."

"You only push me like that because you really believe in me," Shirley smiled.

"Yeah," Fenimore gave a slow nod in response, "But you...Thank you, Shirley, for believing in me too."
