[Dec. 2] [Suikoden III] Carbon Copy

Title: Carbon Copy
Day/Theme: Dec. 2, 2011 "I can't be you."
Series: Suikoden III
Character/Pairing: Sasarai & colleagues, Hikusaak
Rating: G

Sasarai assumed this was as good a time as any to ask about something that his been on his mind for years. The overall pleasant mood of his colleagues at his point indicated he had good odds of being humored. Well, they were extending their previously scheduled meeting for a few moments in celebration of his birthday. Olia had even brought him a very peculiar specialty cake from her hometown.

"Was there a general expectation that I would be another Hikusaak?"

Hikami cleared his throat in a half-successful attempt to stifle a laugh. Olia smiled indulgently at the generally stuffy man beside her before turning her sharp-tipped eyes at Sasarai, "I suppose that depends on what kind of Hikusaak you think we expected you to be."

Sasarai wrinkled his nose and poked at the sunflower seed-studded white frosting with his fork. Might it hurt his already somewhat politically delicate relationship with the female bishop if he didn't end up liking the taste of her gift? "What do you mean by that?" he replied, searching for a way to arrive at the answer he sought as well as buying himself some more time with the Fatylese cake.

"From the moment I learned that you existed, Sasarai, I knew there was no way you could be a tiny replica of the Hero Hikusaak or our Holy Father Hikusaak." There was a surprising amount of humor in Olia's tone as she looked around the circular table for support from her fellow older Counsel members. There was plenty to be found in Gavelle and Heizan's sparkling eyes and good-natured smiles, Hikami's muffled chuckling (what was so terrible about giving voice to a full-bodied laugh), Komatsu's nod, and, perhaps also in Sakurazaki's ear to ear grin (but Sakurazaki grinned often, so it was difficult to say).

"The last thing we felt we needed was another dreamer Hikusaak," Hikami managed to agree clearly despite his ongoing bouts of surreptitious laughter. "Even with all the keeping to himself that the chief priest does, when he is awake and engaging with him, he can be hard to handle. I think part of it is how completely cut off he is from the times. A man who's barely really lived since the year 100 is bound to be out of sync with the world."

"So, Sasarai," Olia's eyes lit up as it dawned on her that there might be something useful within whatever thoughts or event had spurred this train of questioning, "What's this about? Did you think that part two of the noble, holy Hikusaak was who you were expected to be? ...Did your father actually say something to you along those lines?"

"He did turn out a little like that dreamer side of Hikusaak," Ket grumbled, but his unhelpful contribution to the conversation was ignored.

"N-no," Sasarai shook his head. He should have seen this turn of strategy before it came, but Olia's cake had turned out to be quite good, and, for that reason, somewhat distracting. "He never said anything of the sort. I just... It was just an impression I received from... Well, the rest of you."

"I think I can already identify a prime candidate for the source of that nonsense," Olia looked to her left, "...Hikami."
