[OCT 7] [Watchmen] Unraveling
Title: Unraveling
Day/Theme: 7. Lacking the courage to hug you
Series: Watchmen
Character/Pairing: Rorschach, Nite Owl
Rating: PG
Some nights it wasn't enough to be heroes. Some things were just so awful that only humans could bear them. Which was why Rorschach turned away, choking back whatever part of him the city had gotten its teeth into, and why Nite Owl reached for his turned back twice before losing nerve.
The human under his mask was afraid of making it worse, afraid of being slapped away (because rage suited Rorschach better than despair), and most of all, afraid that there wasn't enough human left under Rorschach to accept or even recognize the gesture as anything but contemptible.
So, he held back and the moment was lost, and the stitch that could've stopped the unraveling of one soul went missing, leaving only the loose threads to trail behind and catch on all the city's rough spots and be pulled even thinner.
