She had tried to explain to the wizard. She had become mortal enough to weep frightened tears and that part of her hadn't faded. He had warned her about being human enough to cry and she had only shed a few tears. Maybe that was why there would always be that little empty space inside her. It nestled between the very old loneliness and the very new regret and maybe if she had those tears back it wouldn't feel so empty.
Maybe if she had cried more she could've wept all the immortality out herself. She might've remained Amalthea and spared herself this vague, gentle misery. It would have cost her whole race its freedom, would've exiled true beauty and magic from the world, would've cost everything alive a piece of its soul. Instead, it had only cost her.

Unicorns didn't cry, but the part of her was still human enough to think that she would feel better if she could.
