[August 25] [Suikoden III] A Dreamer's Country
Title: A Dreamer's Country
Day/Theme: Aug. 25, 2011 "how nice -- to feel nothing, and still get full credit for being alive."
Series: Suikoden III
Character/Pairing: Sasarai, Lucas Orsini, Hikusaak
Rating: PG
"When he's dreaming, can he listen?"
Sasarai jumped away from the simple wooden door in surprise. "Saints above, Lucas! You nearly gave me a heart attack!" the bishop clutched at his chest and relaxed, sliding back against the cold, white wall.
Lucas grinned back at his hand-picked friend. His teeth looked impressively white even in the dim light of the stairwell. "Ooh, what's this? Scared you're gonna get bawled out for being down here? You've gotta learn to take it easy, Sasarai. ...Uh, easier, I mean. You're Sasarai, son of Hikusaak, remember? If you want to come down here and ask Dad for a raise in your allowance, what do you think anyone's going to do to you?"
The blond man's lackadaisical attitude certainly did a lot to ease Sasarai's tension. ...But his comments also brought a few other questions to the forefront of Sasarai's mind. He wasn't going to berate his maybe-friend for a lack of reverence or anything, but... "Lucas, are you allowed to be down here? I've always gotten the impression that access to my father is highly restricted."
"Oh. Uh, about that. I don't know. I just asked where you were and your, um, handmaid, or whatever she is, told me you went to see your father. You didn't close the door behind you, so I figured I'd just follow you down here."
He was so bold. Sasarai felt like he would never be able to relate to this wild streak Lucas possessed. Any of the things he had done in the Grasslands that might be considered brave weren't really courageous, but choices he had made out of desperation, his back up against a wall. "...I won't say anything. I just don't want you to get scolded. My father isn't exactly...Well, his doors aren't open to visitors."
"Not even you, huh?"
Hikusaak's son was not sure how to respond to that. In a way, those words perfectly defined his disappointment.
"A man who's sleeping is running the country," Lucas mused.
"You're all but mutinous," a sad smile crept back across Sasarai's round face.
"You should be running the country for him."
"Okay, now you're out and out mutinous."
"Maybe a little bit," Lucas shrugged, "But isn't an awake supporter worth more than a sleeping father?"
"Are you sure you're still a konserase*?" Sasarai replied, trying to tease back instead of succumbing to further dark thoughts on the matter.
"A konserase could like a living ruler too," Lucas spoke without artifice.
"I never knew you trusted me so much..."
