Series: Fullmetal Alchemist

Author's comment: Loosely connected to the 9th's 'In Ishval, Unheralded.' With a little inspiration from the cool fic "Arcanum Paterfamilias" by
whips_n_dozers and a little borrowing from their Ishvalan glossary. Go check it out! Also, I still really need to settle on a post-series name for Scar. ^^;
Ishval wasn't naturally a very green or leafy place. The war had not done the land any favors in this regard. The old irrigation channels had been completely useless in the condition they were in when Miles and the man formerly known as "Scar" returned to Ishval. Rebuilding what was still useable and improving the system turned out to be a major undertaking. They had built their own garden in the desert. ...more than one, actually.
Scar reached up and ran his fingers through the leaves of an avocado tree. So glossy and green. Daniel followed the gesture with his yellow eyes, trying to find some kind of deep meaning in it, as he did with all of the priestly man's actions, but could locate none aside from the general poetry of his movement. "You're not that used to trees, are you, zhoji?"
"Perhaps the truth is more that you take their presence for granted," his host replied. He didn't mean to chastise the boy, but it couldn't hurt to make him think a bit.
"Ah," Daniel croaked, "I didn't think of that."
Miles met them with the same funny smile he reserved for every occasion he had chance to meet Daniel and Scar together. "What are you doing?" he inquired. Both Scar and Daniel were seated cross-legged below the avocado tree.
"Meditating," Scar answered.
"Trying to meditate," Daniel echoed the Ishvalan.
"I suppose this is as good a place for it as any," Miles admitted. "I imagine it feels good for you to go somewhere quiet and find a temporary respite from your responsibilities. ...And when you two are together, the heckling, I imagine."
"He likes the heckling, I think," Scar cast a bemused eye over Daniel.
"Is that so?"
"Just checking on everything, seeing the quiet places is better," Daniel spoke up for himself, "But I don't feel like I'm being heckled in the settlements. ...Anyway, I like being recognized."
"Ah, istaya," Scar half-sighed, half-laughed.
"It's in his blood," Miles shook his head.
