I don't know where this came from or why I wanted to write it. I do believe it's one of the most ungodly depressing things I've ever written. And it's so short. Plus, I think I just committed fandom sacrilege. My only defense is that it was character exploration.

It had been weeks, but he still felt the sting.

He had scarcely been able to believe it when he had received the call from Lieutenant Tragg concerning the illustrious defense attorney's fate. A collision on the highway—no survivors. And worse than that was the fact that Tragg was involved at all. Someone had tampered with the brakes. After so many years of catching murderers in court, now someone needed to catch his murderer.

And through pain-staking, diligent investigation between him, the police, and the others, they had brought it about. The murderer, the angry sister of a killer long ago convicted, had faced justice. Now she was on death row.

Where she belonged, Hamilton Burger thought bitterly. He poured himself a cup of coffee and sat back at his desk, staring blankly out the window.

It was funny; the day he had rested his case and the jury pronounced the woman Guilty, he could have sworn that his long-time friend and rival had been standing at his side, congratulating him on a job well-done.

Then again, perhaps it was not so strange as all that.

Here’s to you, Perry, Hamilton said in silence as he raised his mug.
