[August 14] [Fullmetal Alchemist] We'll Be in Touch, One Way or Another
Title: We'll Be in Touch, One Way or Another
Day/Theme: Aug. 14, 2011 "and we lie: 'I'll never leave you.'"
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Character/Pairing: Isaac McDougal & Solf J. Kimblee (sort of McDougal->Kimblee)
Rating: PG
Author's comment: Definitely inspired by cute McDougal art I saw on tumblr. Yep.
"You're staying in the service, right, Kimblee?" Isaac McDougal asked, not quite idly.
"After the war is over, you mean?" Kimblee's eyes didn't drift from the file he was putting to his fingernails. "I don't really see myself as a career military man. That's not to say I won't be remaining within the grip of the government though. Working as a State Alchemist has been extremely fulfilling for me and I wouldn't trade that for anything. It seems to me that I have plenty of time to puzzle out where I should end up."
"I bet you'll get a medal," Isaac shifted closer, eager to actually catch Kimblee's eye. The Crimson Lotus Alchemist was always drifting just outside his sphere. He was elegant and talented, with an undeniable taste for death. And he was intelligent too. Isaac was certain that the curious rumors he had heard would come together one way or another if only this interesting man would deign to give him the chance to mull them over with him.
Kimblee turned back and graced Isaac with a relaxed smile. "I don't see why you wouldn't receive one as well, McDougal."
"Isaac is fine."
"Ah. Isaac, then," Kimblee corrected himself.
Wasn't there maybe, possibly, some kind of way that they could be friends? Isaac liked the way Kimblee was looking at him just now. He smiled back, although his lopsided grin felt dull and awkward in comparison to Kimblee's brilliance. "I hope you stay in the military. After the war, I'm sure all of us will be promoted. I'd hope that I could still see you...that maybe we'd be assigned to the same region..."
"I'm sure if we try, we can keep in touch wherever we go, Isaac." He paused in recollection, then spoke again with words that touched his fellow alchemist to his core because they were so very much the words he wanted to hear. "Thank you for looking after me, making that ice and what-not when I had that bit of trouble with the heat."
"You remembered! I wasn't sure you were, uh, coherent enough to even know I was there."
"I remember. You were very gentle. ...Oh, would you look at the time. I have to go, there's some experimental equipment I have to report in about, but it shouldn't be long. Isaac," Kimblee patted him on the shoulder, "I'll see you around."
"Have a nice afternoon, Kimblee."
