Aang stares dumfounded at the pile of bones. His people are gone, and no matter how valiantly they fought, or how many firebenders they took down with them, this is the end.
Sokka and Katara both know what it is to lose, but not to lose everyone. When Aang returns to Appa and weeps, they let him. Aang alone knows what is lost.
The hardest part for Aang is not that he loved those who died here, but that he has been taught not to hate, and he hates the Fire Nation so much now that he can barely breathe.
