[August 1] [Silent Hill 3] Song of a Dead God
Title: Song of a Dead God
Day/Theme: August 1/ the dying of a small god within you
Series: Silent Hill 3
Character: Heather Morris
Rating: PG-13 for references to violence and death and general dark themes
Word Count: 300
Inside the belly of Heather Morris, a god sings.
It is an old song, and an ugly one, about a world where a god is born to take and never to give. She plays her music too loud sometimes, trying to drown out the god and her song, but all that happens is that her father complains and bangs on the door. He says he hates what she is listening to, but how can she explain to him that the song which comes from nowhere is so much worse than any music on earth.
When she closes her eyes, she dreams of an altar. It glows red in an eternal night and draws worshippers from all over the world, monsters which crawl and kick and roll, and a few shadowed furtive people who still look human.
And each night the god Heather has become chooses one person-thing for a sacrifice, and lifts the knife, and screams as she plunges it down. The monsters laugh and dance and feast as Heather wakes and runs to the bathroom to vomit.
Her father worries, and because she knows he worries too much, she never speaks of the song or the monsters or the dead. She tries to be the best girl she can be, and instead of spells against evil she asks him for fairy tales that she is too old for. And she asks him for tales from great and glorious myths instead of the true ones.
At night she curls up on herself and screams, and Harry takes her to doctors he cannot afford. His face grows tight and shadowed. So she hides it all, as a young woman can, and pretends. And it's not until it's too late that she thinks to ask, "Daddy, how do you kill a god?"
