She did not hear the spirits with her ears, but with her skin. Her sense of touch was what connected her to the invisible world, just as it had the other spirit-speakers before her. They blew past her through the air, pulled into her lips as she breathed, rubbed and roiled around her ankles as she waded through the stream, and brushed against the bottoms of her fingers when she touched them to the trees. The spirits never left her, even as she slept, communing with her even in her dreams. She didn’t mind. She didn’t know any other life.
