[June 2] [Original] Recurring Daytime Nightmare
Title: Recurring Daytime Nightmare
Day/Theme: June 2, 2011 "Mendacious and delusive streets"
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Benjamin & Niko
Rating: PG
"Ben-ja-min," came the voice out of the shadows. And Benjamin stopped at the sound of his name, clutching at his jacket, holding himself close, until he realized that there was no one threatening him and that Niko had turned around and was staring, curiously, innocently, hopeful that he might save his friend from the darkness in his heart. Pity poor Niko, Ben thought, having chosen for himself such a friend. He had decades behind him that he vowed Niko would never know of. His scars were too deep. Anyway, it wasn't all that Niko probably thought it was. He was a sinner himself.
"Are y-y-you...?" Niko struggled for words to express his concern. It wasn't that the situation was too difficult to address, it was just words in general didn't come easily to him.
"It's okay," Ben answered. Deep breaths. Deep breaths. His fingers slowly unhooked from the edge of his black jacket and dropped to his sides. "It was just a passing bit of nerves. You know how it can be. Sometimes a guy imagines things."
It was the neighborhood that did it, Ben was sure. This wasn't so far from that place. The place where he had lived with Irnald and that person. It was as if bad memories had a life of their own. Like in some eastern legend, the things that had happened had congealed into some kind of vengeful spirit that rose with the fog and tried to reach out and drag him down into oblivion. ...Maybe he was- scratch that. He was probably over-thinking things.
"If y-you say," Niko nodded solemnly. No matter how much he wanted to help Ben, deep down he knew. The city oppressed Ben from without. The labyrinth of memory oppressed him from within. Ben had saved Niko from a world of loneliness, but there was no way for Niko to save Ben from himself.
