[June 1] [Original] Strange Young Guns
Title: Strange Young Guns
Day/Theme: June 1, 2011 "Who are these children, who scheme and run wild?"
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Don Camillo and colleagues
Rating: PG
Author's comment: I guess I'm writing for June? :D Though I'm not exactly off to the best of starts.
"Don Camillo, when did you start accepting unknown brats into our ranks?" Lusse asked. He couldn't out and out complain, it was the boss's privilege to be able to pick and chose hired hands as he liked without interference from the men below him, but some of those choices still bothered him.
Don Camillo set the sheaf of papers in his hand down onto his already overburdened oaken desk. He walked over and put his hand on Lusse's shoulder, turning him to face out the window overlooking the alleyway. Down below they could see the young man in question, leaning against the opposite wall, chatting with another small youth. They were cast in an orange-yellow glow by the lights of the restaurant below the don's office. "Giovanni came with a pretty powerful recommendation from Tib, Lusse. And Tib wouldn't come back without him. It was too good a deal to refuse."
Lusse squirmed under the boss's "friendly" touch. He wasn't sure Tib coming back into the gang was exactly a good idea itself. Tib had a habit of being less than discrete, both when carrying out official jobs and when engaging in his questionable hobbies (even considering the standards of the gang, a lot of members thought that Tib was sort of depraved). He was going to get into real trouble someday and all Russo could hope was that he didn't take any of the rest of the Camillo Gang with him. "What'd Tib say about him that was so great?"
"I can't tell you that, Lusse. Sorry, it's just that little Giovanni swore me to secrecy. You'll see though, when he hits the streets. He's got what it takes."
Lusse relented slightly. Maybe it was just realizing how useless it was to fight upstream in cases like this. He was going to have to get along with Tib and this Giovanni brat as long as they were with the gang anyway. He might as well get used to it. "Was he the one who shot all those bottles in the alleyway yesterday? To demonstrate?"
"Yep, Giovanni. He's a crack shot, that's for sure." The don seemed pleased over both his acquisition and Lusse's gradual acceptance of it.
Still, something nagged at Lusse. "Just Giovanni though, right? Not any other kids? ...Is he completely trustworthy? You're going to have to tell him not to bring his friends around." At this hour and distance, it wasn't as if Lusse could glean much real information about the boy speaking with Giovanni, but it was never good to have extraneous people hanging around the office (not with people who knew- and thus could tell- that the floor above the restaurant was the don's office). He was smaller than Giovanni and dressed in black. If he were half as cocky, Lusse would guess at conspiracy. How old was the second son of Ernano Bosso? Could Giovanni be a plant?
"You've got to learn to relax, Lusse, and let me handle these things. It's above your level, okay? If you see Giovanni or Tib doing something strange, you report it back to me. Otherwise, take it easy and keep doing your job as usual. You're a good guy, Lusse. I don't want to lose you to a random moment of nerves."
"Yeah. Yeah, I'll work at it. Sorry, boss."
