[April 6] [Original] Dreams of Spring
Title: Dreams of Spring
Day/Theme: April 6, 2011 "sweet and stupid"
Series: Original - Navigator
Character/Pairing: Stuart, Julian, May
Rating: G
"What are you going to do when we reach Earth?" May asked Stuart. "You are Julian are taking this trip together, right?" The two brunettes sat together staring out the window as the star-spotted expanse of space flashed by while Julian waited out the trip off on his own, crouched over a battered paperback.
"Something like that. He was invited to speak at a conference, but he says he won't do it. I'm sure it comes as no surprise to you that he hates public speaking."
"It'd be bizarre if he didn't," the young pilot answered. "He can barely take holding a conversation with three people at once."
"Well, that professor of his- an old teacher or mentor or something- asked him to at least come down and talk to him about it in person and I convinced him that was a good idea. So," Stuart smiled hopefully, despite his best regarding how things would turn out, "If the meeting goes poorly, it will be partially my fault and we probably won't end up doing anything together at all."
"I don't think he's going to decide to do the speaking thing."
"Nor do I. But it would be nice to tell his teacher so in person." Stuart folded his hands and looked primly down at them.
"So," May shifted the subject back to her original question, "Assuming the two of you do end up spending your shore leave together, what will you do?"
"Nothing overly exciting. Just some low-key things. You know, enjoying all the opportunities for being outside in nature and visiting other locations that being planet-side provides."
"Sounds good. I'm going to visit my parents. ...But you probably guessed that... The weather back home is nice at this time of year. I guess it's almost spring..."
"Spring," he echoed back, "That's right."

Julian, against the advice and hopeful pleas of his past teacher, chose to skip the conference entirely. Stuart chose not to comment on or criticize this. "You would've been bored there anyway," Julian offered an excuse.
"I didn't think I was invited," the chaplain answered sincerely. "Well, anyway," he cheerfully raised the bag he had brought back from a local convenience store, hoping his friend would inquire as to the contents, "I've thought of something we might do today. You know, to celebrate the season."
"Mmm, it's spring," Julian nodded, twisting the edges of the pastel-colored furoshiki in his gloved hands. He had been thinking about spring a lot lately. While Stuart was out visiting with some local acquaintances and picking up whatever it was that he had wanted from the convenience store, Julian had made use of the kitchen to prepare an especially complex bento for two. He had his own idea of a lovely way to pass much of the day, but it was somewhat difficult for him to bring it up. He wanted the impossible. "Stuart, read my mind," he begged internally, uselessly. The priest was incredibly sweet, but Julian also found him frustratingly clueless.
Stuart carried on in his excitement. "I know it's a bit early, what with Palm Sunday still coming up this Sunday, but I bought a couple of things thinking maybe we could paint some Easter eggs! Have you ever done that before?" When Stuart was caught up in some grand idea of his (Julian thought of them as good-natured schemes), he could talk about it endlessly. "We could even try and work out how to use wax and dyes to make some in that traditional Russian style!"
"I, um," Julian interjected softly and slowly. "Today... I already had an idea." Stuart broke off his rambling to listen intently. Julian wished his companion wouldn't look at him like that. It made the whole thing a bit more difficult than he liked. He was far from eloquent. "...There are flowering trees here. I saw them on the way over. And...maybe there are cherry blossoms?"
Stuart nodded, encouraging him to continue. "There are."
"What I want... I mean, what I thought. I," he held up the wrapped bento-box, "We could get out a picnic blanket and sit under some cherry trees and...go hanami. Cherry blossom viewing."
"Out on an Irish boulevard?" the priest laughed, "Julian, that would be lovely!"
