Axel swore aloud as he ducked under the Heartless' swipe. Gritting his teeth he sunk his charka into its side. The neoshadow sank back into the darkness from which it was spawned. Unfortunately two more sprang up to take its place. Igniting one on fire, he slashed at the other sparing a moment to glance over his should in his partner's direction.
Roxas was completely obscured by the mob of Heartless surrounding him. All Axel could see was the occasional glimpse of blond hair rising above the crowd or a flash of something metallic. Roxas was what the Organization had long awaited, a keyblade wielder with whom they could finally form Kingdom Hearts. Yet Axel didn't think it was a wise idea to throw the kid this thick into combat his first time out. Axel was soon surrounded by his own mob, able could do nothing but curse Xemnas' greed and hope the kid could survive on his own.
At last Axel's own Heartless were burned or slashed away. He turned back toward the kid. If Axel had a heart it would have dropped. He could see nothing but a mass of black. Then, suddenly Axel caught a glimpse of a flash of light. The keyblade was again visible slicing through heartless like butter. Roxas was literally glowing, his element radiating out from him. Roxas 's normally empty cerulean eyes were alive with intent and purpose. Gone was the sullen, blank slate Axel had taken on the is mission. Instead Axel saw a hero, the one who would save them all. With his speed enhanced by his element, Roxas effortlessly cut through all the heartless.
Once he finished Roxas' light dimmed. He stood to the side panting slightly, his blank stare back. Axel swallowed a lump he didn't even know was in his throat. "Nice work kid. Not bad from your first time out."
Was it Axel's imagination or did he see something there, hiding in Roxas' once again empty blue eyes? He looped an arm around the kid's shoulders, "Let go get some ice cream and celebrate a job well done- my treat."
